Overview

Applications are invited to apply for a locum appointment to a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in PCI. The post holder will flexibly deliver 8.5 PAs of emergency, inpatient and outpatient care of patients with ischaemic heart disease, with a further 1.5 PA allocated SPA time. The post is based at Leeds General Infirmary, a large tertiary cardiac centre with a multidisciplinary team and comprehensive interventional services.

The post is fixed term for 6 months starting April 2026, with options to extend if mutually agreed. The purpose of this appointment is to cover a vacated position within the Interventional Cardiology Team.

Main duties of the job

The successful appointee will join the existing rostered direct clinical activity delivered by the interventional team supported by a team of 10 other Cardiologists (6 PCI, 4 Structural and 1 Research). This includes:

  • Acute Clinical Work:
    Monday-Friday in-hours acute coronary service, assessing and managing acute coronary syndrome and coronary intervention patients on CCU and the Cardiology ward, supported by the General Cardiology consultant on-call. (1 in 8.5)
  • Weekday acute cath lab PCI rota Monday-Thursday 8am to 6pm. (1 in 10)
  • Out-of-hours coronary intervention rota. (1 in 5 weekday night on-call, 1 in 10 weekend on-call (24 hours Friday and Sunday))
  • Elective Clinical Work:
    Regular elective cath lab PCI sessions and regular outpatient clinic activity. The posts have no on call commitment for Acute Medicine.

    Eligibility, Fitness to practise, and Language Skills

    • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
    • Eligibility to work in the UK
    • Is up to date and fit to practise safely
    • Have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues

    Qualifications

    • MB BS (or equivalent)
    • MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification

    Experience

    • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Cardiology
    • Should have completed a recognised 2-year subspecialty training programme in interventional cardiology
    • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
    • Must demonstrate higher subspecialty experience in interventional cardiology
    • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in cardiology to provide consultant level on-call

    Desirable

    • Dedicated Interventional Fellow training programme for 1 year
    • Experience in complex coronary intervention e.g. rotational atherectomy, OCT/IVUS, left main stem PCI, bifurcation PCI
    • Attendance at recognised management course

    Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

    • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research and audit
    • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors
    • Well organised and skilled in good time management
    • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team
    • Effective interpersonal skills

    Desirable

    • Publication evidence of commitment to research
    • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops
