Overview

We are looking for an individual to fill this replacement post within the Cellular Pathology Department at St James's University Hospital. This is a full time consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of GI pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. There is also the opportunity to do some specialist Liver pathology as part of this post.

The GI pathology service currently comprises 10 substantive consultants working variable amounts of time dedicated to GI work. As many of the services operate at a regional or national referral level, there is a broad and interesting workload ranging from complex endoscopic polyp resections to multi-visceral pelvic exenteration surgery. The service supports three MDTs, which include regional services for advanced colorectal, anal and upper GI cancers and a gastroenterology clinicopathological correlation meeting.

Responsibilities
  • Provide timely and reliable cellular pathology service in collaboration with consultant colleagues, specifically including GI pathology.
  • Participate in review service as part of tertiary service activity.
  • Provide advice and support to clinical colleagues, discuss histopathological findings and contribute to audit and monitoring of clinical effectiveness.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinical care and maintain regular programme of surgical multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Cover other consultant colleagues for periods of annual or study leave.
  • Actively participate in continuous service improvement culture in the department.
  • Work with Lead Clinician in Histopathology and the Pathology CSU Leadership Team and other staff in delivery of efficient and effective pathology service in keeping with Lean principles.
  • Participate in effective running of the department, contributing to equitable share of workload and facilities; engage in efficient use of staff and resources for development of the service.
  • Maintain close working relationship with other consultant histopathologists and technical and scientific staff.
  • Attend staff meetings and share in open discussions for decisions.
  • Support procedures, standards and initiatives required for laboratory accreditation by UKAS Ltd and inspection by the HTA.
  • Participate in departmental and external audit activity, including audits performed within Regional and National Specialty Networks and quality assurance in Histopathology.
  • Participate in relevant National Specialist EQA Scheme(s) and CPD activities.
  • Participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
  • Contribute to professional supervision and training of medical, scientific and technical staff.
  • Undertake research and development work within LTHT if desired.

  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
  • Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK and fit to practice safely.
  • Must demonstrate high level of clinical experience and competence in cellular pathology.
  • Must demonstrate higher experience and specialist training in GI histopathology.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
  • Well organised and skilled in good time management.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to relate to and work within a team.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CCST within 6 months of interview;
    Portfolio Pathway or international applicants complying with GMC specialty registration process.
  • Attendance at recognised management course (desirable).
  • Relevant higher degree (desirable).
  • Dedicated training time in specialist GI pathology (desirable).
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff (desirable).
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops (desirable).
