Trust Doctor in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Applicants are invited for a post as Trust doctor/Clinical Fellow (ST3‑5 equivalent) in Obstetrics and in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a friendly, dynamic, large, teaching acute hospital trust.

Applicants must have completed Foundation competencies either as part of the UK Foundation programme or have demonstrated equivalent training. Ideally applicants should have worked at a ST3+ level for at least one year within the UK. Basic Life Support training is essential and a current, valid GMC registration at the time of application is required.

The post is suitable for doctors wishing to gain clinical experience at a ST3+ level in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. It offers a wide range of experience in all areas of the specialty, supported by a Clinical Supervisor to meet career and educational goals.

The post holder will contribute to the obstetrics and gynaecology inpatient and outpatient services and participate in the second on‑call rota (frequency 1 in 10). They will predominantly work at the St James University Hospital (SJUH) and Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) sites, working on the labour ward, reviewing obstetric and gynaecological emergencies, caring for antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology inpatients and attending antenatal and gynaecology clinics.

Opportunities to attend elective gynaecology and obstetric theatres and departmental teaching and quality improvement work are also available.

All clinical duties are supervised by a Consultant and performed as part of a multidisciplinary team, with emphasis on good communication skills.

The gynaecology service is predominantly based at St James University Hospital (Chancellor Wing). Some elective gynaecology work, including clinics, day case and overnight theatre and hysteroscopy, takes place at Wharfdale hospital. The fertility service is based at Seacroft Hospital. The maternity service operates from St James University Hospital (≈4,500 deliveries per year) and Leeds General Infirmary (≈5,000 deliveries per year).

The post holder will work on the second on‑call (ST3+) rota and will be supervised by a Consultant. They will be expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating good communication skills with all members of the team.

The weekly timetable will vary, including sessions in antenatal clinic, delivery suite, gynaecology outpatients, gynaecology theatre and the emergency gynaecology assessment unit. These sessions provide a diverse clinical experience and accommodate a rolling on‑call rota of long days and night shifts on the labour ward and gynaecology acute treatment unit. On‑call frequency is 1 in 10.

The post holder will always be resident in the hospital when on duty. Consultant Obstetricians are resident 08:30‑22:00 on weekdays and 08:30‑17:30 on weekends;
Consultant Gynaecologists are resident 08:30‑17:00 on weekdays and conduct resident ward rounds on weekends. Both may remain resident beyond these times if required but are otherwise on call from home.
