Overview

The Leeds Renal Service is seeking a Locum Consultant Nephrologist for a 10 PA appointment starting March 2026, initially 6 months, with plans for a substantive role.

Qualifications & Eligibility
  • Accreditation in Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent, and on the Specialist Register or within six months of admission for trainees.
  • Hold full GMC Registration with a licence to practice.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed date within six months of interview) or CESR; international applicants must comply with the GMC specialty registration process.
  • All applicants must demonstrate adequate written and spoken English.
  • MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification.
  • Relevant higher degree (desirable).
Essential Experience
  • A high level of clinical experience and competence in renal medicine.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion within nephrology, dialysis and renal transplantation, and take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary renal centre.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care for nephrology, dialysis and renal transplant patients as part of a consultant team at St James's University Hospital.
  • Share responsibility with other consultant nephrologists for the care of the Trust's chronic haemodialysis patients, supervising care of patients who dialyse at the satellite unit in Seacroft.
  • Staff specific renal outpatient clinics as per the renal consultant team job plan.
  • Contribute to care of patients following renal transplantation.
  • Participate in the renal consultant on‑call rota (1:15 for renal 24 hours).
  • Provide clinical supervision to all postgraduate trainees within the department.
  • Engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Trust.
  • Develop and conduct research to benefit the clinical service.
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels.
About the Department

The role is within an enthusiastic and supportive renal department with 17 consultant colleagues, an associate specialist and junior doctor team. The posts are based at St James's University Hospital and are predominantly clinical.
