Clinical Fellow in Interventional Cardiology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow in Interventional Cardiology to join the team at the West Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary. The post will be a fixed‑term 1 year position starting August 2026, ideally suited for individuals who are either post CCT (or equivalent) or approaching CCT with a subspecialty interest in interventional cardiology, complex interventions and CTO.

The Fellowship is designed to provide the skills required to become an independent PCI operator with high levels of complex PCI and CTO performance.

• The Fellow will work closely with Dr Abdul Mozid who leads one of the highest volume CTO PCI services in the UK, performing 125–150 cases per year with >90% success using all hybrid techniques.
• Gain first‑operator experience across CTO techniques and become familiar with the CTO toolbox.
• Participate fully in the PCI programme, including elective and acute lists, patient management, meetings, research and conferences.
• Perform approximately 500 PCIs during the year, the majority as first operator.
• There are no on‑call or general cardiology/medical commitments attached to this post; basic salary will be paid. The Fellow may support the StR on‑call rota if there are gaps, without interfering with day‑to‑day commitments.

The appointment will be based at the West Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary – the largest tertiary cardiac centre in the United Kingdom. The centre serves a population of 2.8 million in West Yorkshire and an additional 5.8 million in Yorkshire & Humber. Leeds performs 2200 PCI per annum (1100 primary), staying the busiest PPCI centre in the UK.

The core PCI team comprises Dr Heeraj Bulluck, Dr Arka Das, Dr Sameer Kurmani, Dr Abdul Mozid, Dr Jennifer Rossington, Dr Murugu Veerasamy and Professor Stephen Wheatcroft, with additional interventionalists, specialists in structural intervention or research, and 11 visiting consultants supporting out‑of‑hours work.

During the Fellowship, the Fellow will be exposed to complex PCI equipment: lesion modification (Rotablation, Shockwave, Laser, Orbital atherectomy) and intravascular imaging (IVUS, OCT). Although Leeds has a leading structural programme, this Fellowship focuses on complex coronary intervention.

The post is fixed term for one year, starting August 2026.

• Skilled in the basics of managing medical/surgical conditions, including emergencies
• Proficient in a range of medical procedures as an indication of manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination
• Skilled in management of acute cardiological emergencies
• Clarity in written/spoken communication & capacity to adapt language as appropriate
• Able to work in multi‑professional teams & supervise junior medical staff

• Ability to write and submit papers for peer‑review publication independently
• Ability to conduct clinical research studies independently
• Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances

• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
• Eligibility to work in the UK
• Up to date and fit to practise safely
• Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate for effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues

• Current ALS certification or equivalent
• MBChB or equivalent

• MD, PhD or equivalent
• CCT or equivalent

• Evidence of achievement of CT/ST competencies in medicine (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training)
• At least 4 years experience in medical specialities
• Involvement in research

• Completion of a full‑time research programme leading to an MD/PhD
