HSE Specialist - Health, Safety & Environment Specialist

Lebanon, TN

Royal Canin is seeking a Health, Safety & Environment Specialist to join our exciting pet food business at a manufacturing plant in Lebanon, TN. We focus our attention on the unique needs of cats and dogs. That obsession with detail allows us to deliver precise, effective nutrition and help them become their magnificent best.

The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Specialist reports to Site HSE Manager and is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the HSE management system. The HSE Specialist plays an essential role in this management system through hands‑on execution of the Regional and Global HSE Standards, while fostering a positive HSE culture, driving associate involvement, and delivering improvements in compliance and risk reduction year over year.

This position is the direct interface between associate HSE activities and management teams.

What will be your key responsibilities?

Ensure the site maintains a continuous state of compliance with HSE company standards and governmental regulations.
  • Assist in developing and implementing all company HSE Standards as they apply to the site.
  • Execute proper management of the site's hazardous waste management activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and company standards.
  • Develop and deploy site‑specific HSE programs and plans to position the site as a best‑in‑class organization.
  • Deliver training and coaching to establish clear understanding/engagement by all site associates on HSE expectations.
  • Ensure investigation of all HSE‑related incidents, utilizing specific tools to find the root cause and identify actions to prevent recurrence; drive implementation completion of corrective actions.
  • Serve as an HSE technical expert in conjunction with the site HSE Manager, providing technical expertise and coaching as needed in all areas and initiatives of the function, including capital project safety, environmental review, and risk management associated with non‑capital modifications.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through effective safety awareness and incentive programs.
  • Lead and ensure the site emergency response team (ERT) has the tools, skills, and knowledge to respond effectively to site HSE emergencies.
  • Lead site efforts to measure and improve Industrial Hygiene Risk, including ergonomics, dust, noise, and chemical exposure, and coordinate all necessary IH and audiometric monitoring.
  • Manage a variety of HSE Systems such as Keytroller, Forklift Speed Zones, POKA, Weaver Apps, Enablon data entry, and PPE vending machines.
  • Manage the internal audit program and provide backup coverage for the site HSE Manager as required.
  • What are we looking for?

    Education & Professional Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in an EHS field is preferred.
    • Professional Certifications are preferred (GSP, ASP, CSP).

    Knowledge / Experience

    • Ability to interact with site‑level manufacturing/business management and regulatory agencies is required.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, including a high level of comfort in developing and delivering training and motivational presentations to all levels of the organization.
    • Strong HSE regulatory knowledge and expertise (EPA, OSHA, DOT) is required.
    • 1‑5 years experience managing safety and environmental programs or projects in a manufacturing environment or school‑related program is required.
    • Basic knowledge of food manufacturing is desired.
    • Demonstrated leadership in leading an HSE program/system in a manufacturing environment is required.
    • Experience with hazard recognition, behavioral‑based safety, and job hazard analysis is desired.
    • Strong technical ability is desired – computer systems experience, ability to learn.
