Overview
Overview The Director serves as the primary security advisor for Dartmouth Health, promoting an environment defined by exceptional customer service, collaboration, and continuous improvement. This role oversees system-wide safety and security programs to ensure the protection of employees, patients, and visitors, ensures compliance with OSHA and Joint Commission requirements, and maintains adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Director also partners closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and exercises independent judgment in carrying out responsibilities and other assigned activities.
Responsibilities- Implements the overall Dartmouth Health System security strategy, policies, and standards to ensure the physical safety of all employees, patients, and visitors, as well as the protection of property and assets.
- Develops, enforces, and monitors security policies and procedures, ensuring integration across departments, and manages policies related to safety, parking, and transportation. Develops, monitors, and manages the departmental budget, ensuring fiscal accountability across all security operations.
- Designs and delivers educational programs and communications to ensure staff are informed, trained, and equipped to address potential security issues effectively.
- Responds to and supports safety and security incidents, investigates incidents across the system, and collaborates with HR on employee-related issues and misconduct.
- Conducts threat assessments involving violence or disruptive behavior and develops operational and management plans to mitigate identified risks. Leads and directs significant investigations and critical event responses in coordination with law enforcement and other external agencies.
- Oversees the selection, implementation, and maintenance of security technologies and systems, including surveillance, access control, and communications platforms. Provides strategic input on security design and requirements for new construction, renovations, and technology integrations across the system.
- Conducts regular audits and inspections to identify, assess, and mitigate security vulnerabilities and compliance gaps.
- Serves as a liaison to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and participates in relevant advisory groups, committees, and professional associations.
- Oversees security compliance and performance, leading Dartmouth Health's Workplace Violence Prevention and AVADE training programs, participating in key committees (QIC, Patient Safety, Environment of Care, Emergency Management, and Patient Experience), and addressing Joint Commission inquiries.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree with major course work in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Security, or a closely related field required.
- Master's Degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of full-time experience in healthcare or corporate security, law enforcement or related fields, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership and management role.
- Strong leadership and consensus building skills; customer-service mindset; operational problem solving, and decision-making experience; calm under pressure.
- Broad knowledge of law enforcement methods, tactics, and procedures in the management of security operations.
- Excellent written, oral, and organizational skills.
- Strong knowledge of Excel, Word, Power Point.
Licensure/Certification s
- AVADE Training/Crisis Prevention Certification
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required in accordance with D-H's Driver Disqualifications Guidelines
