Position: Supervisory Police Officer (SGT)

Overview

The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Police Officer (Sergeant) ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations within various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments, such as VHA Medical Centers & facilities. The incumbent provides security and assistance to occupants of the facility to which they serve. The incumbent is expected to empathize, engage, and communicate with all individuals and set a positive example for subordinates to follow.

Duties
  • Directs subordinate Police Officers engaged in law enforcement responsibilities and works in collaboration with the Police Supervisor carrying out PS’s overall mission where most work is performed on Departmental property, including properties owned, leased, or licensed when consistent with Federal law, regulation, VA policy, and operational guidance.
  • Directs law enforcement assignments to preserve peace; to prevent, detect, and investigate crimes; to arrest or apprehend violators; and to assist citizens in emergencies, including the protection of civil rights.
  • Plans work schedules and sequence of operations daily to assure an even flow and distribution of work, expeditious handling of priority cases, and meeting schedules and deadlines; revises work schedule to meet changes in workload.
  • Coordinates with law enforcement representatives of other units concerning matters of work accomplishment, priorities and procedures; plans for sufficient supplies; makes recommendations concerning work accomplishment, priorities, procedures, maintenance or replacement of equipment, and safety of facilities.
  • Prepares workload and activity reports as necessary and reports the status of operations.
  • Assigns work to subordinate Police Officers based on factors such as difficulty, requirements of assignments, availability, capability, experience, and special qualifications; formulates and issues written instructions and procedures for non-routine or complex assignments or to clarify published guidelines.
  • Responds to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress and makes independent decisions to take or coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property.
  • Prepares performance standards; reviews work in progress or upon completion; analyzes logs and activity reports to ascertain problems and takes corrective action; keeps officers informed of management goals and keeps higher-level supervisors informed of performance concerns.
  • Prepares formal requests to fill Police Officer vacancies or recruit additional personnel; participates in selection of new officers; prepares recommendations for promotions, reassignments, or recognition of outstanding performance.
  • Approves and disapproves routine leave requests and recommends action in unusual leave usage cases; handles formal grievances and disciplinary actions as needed, up to escalation.
  • Participates in suicide prevention program and intervenes when needed to de-escalate active suicidal behavior and/or prevents suicides.

Physical & Work Environment

Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, and/or armed.

Work Environment: The work involves both moderate and high risks and possible endangerment of life or serious injury that requires safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment. The work is performed in settings with regular exposure to moderate to severe discomforts and unpleasantness such as high temperatures in confined spaces, high temperatures due to mandatory protective equipment, or adverse weather during extended patrol duties.
