Position: Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) - Cancer Prevention

Overview

The Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention is seeking an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) to provide high quality outpatient care in the Cancer Prevention Center and Undiagnosed Breast Clinic. The role may deliver prevention and survivorship care, patient education, and support for clinical research initiatives. The incumbent will promote and maintain patient health across the care continuum through clinical practice, education, administrative responsibilities, research engagement, and ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities
  • Provide quality patient care related to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age, development and other identified needs.
  • Assess health status by performing medical history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment.
  • Provide health care throughout the disease process: diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative and terminal care.
  • Communicate findings verbally and in writing with patients and their families.
  • Prevent, minimize and manage symptoms, toxicities, or health abnormalities related to disease or treatment in collaboration with physicians and other staff.
  • Schedule consultations, diagnostic tests or procedures, and future appointments in coordination with the attending physician.
  • Monitor laboratory, clinical radiographic and procedural data for daily rounds and prepare written information.
Qualifications

Education

Required:

APRN — Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants recognized as an APRN by the Texas Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

PA — Master’s degree from an accredited PA program (ARC-PA), except for PAs who graduated before 2013.

Experience

Preferred:

  • At least 1 year of experience in an Advanced Practice Provider role.
  • Experience in Primary Care, Gynecology — clinical breast exams, pap tests, prostate exams.
  • Prior Oncology experience.
Licensure / Certification

APRN — All of the following:

  • Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an APRN (various designations). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) if working in Pediatric Department.
  • May be required:
    Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.

PA — All of the following:

  • PA certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.
  • May be required:
    Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
  • Must meet the American Heart Association BLS, ACLS or PALS if working in Pediatrics.
