Position: Technical Services Specialist I,II, III

Overview

Performs bibliographic control, classification, and physical processing of materials, to provide information seekers the ability to find, identify, select, obtain access to, and explore library resources.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Responsibilities
  • Create and edit MARC records in the bibliographic database following current standards of Resource Description and Access (RDA), International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), and local policy.
  • Perform subject classification of materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification scheme and Library of Congress subject headings and genre terms.
  • Perform physical processing of all library materials using necessary tags and labels.
  • Process materials tagged for reclassification.
  • Assist Technical Services Librarian with quality control of newly cataloged library materials.
  • Monitor and prioritize workflows in response to internal and external customer needs and expectations.
  • Perform designated task(s), such as:
  • Interlibrary Loan borrowing and lending;
  • Receiving and processing audiovisual materials by reconciling shipments with packing lists, monitoring items for damage or publishing errors, and physically processing materials;
  • Receiving, processing, monitoring, and returning leased items;
  • Processing invoices for payment.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

SPECIALIST I

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • One year of library experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, Library of Congress subject headings, MARC format, Microsoft Windows operating system and Office products, and City/County library policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform methodical and detailed work tasks and communicate effectively with coworkers.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.

SPECIALIST II

  • Library Support Staff Certification and three years of library experience – OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience – OR
  • Five years of direct library experience – AND
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, Library of Congress subject headings, MARC format, Microsoft Windows operating system and Office products, and City/County library policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform methodical and detailed work tasks and communicate effectively with coworkers.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.

SPECIALIST III

  • Library Support Staff Certification and five years of library experience – OR
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science and two years of experience – OR
  • Ten years of direct library experience – AND
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, Library of Congress subject headings, MARC format, Microsoft Windows operating system and Office products, and City/County library policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform methodical and detailed work tasks and communicate effectively with coworkers.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.
Knowledge
  • Library staff roles and the library’s mission and role in the community.
  • City/County library policies and procedures.
  • The ethics and values of libraries and the library profession, which includes knowledge of the Library Bill of Rights and the ALA code of Ethics.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of library records and information.
  • Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • The Library's ILS, Sirsi Dynix Symphony Work Flows.
  • The Dewey Decimal System.
  • Current cataloging standards.
  • Local cataloging guidelines.
