Job SummaryThe Campus Police Sergeant creates and maintains a safe environment for community members pursuing higher education, visitors, and campus property. The Sergeant performs all duties of a sworn police officer while supervising assigned sworn and non-sworn staff in public safety enforcement, security, and campus services. This is a designated position of trust. This role is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA) and reports crimes and incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer for inclusion in the Annual Campus Security Report in accordance with the Clery Act and GGC policy.
Responsibilities- Promotes fair and equitable enforcement of laws, policies, regulations, and institutional rules; performs Public Safety duties in compliance with state and federal laws, including Clery, FERPA, HIPAA, Title IX, USG and GGC policies and accreditation standards; serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
- Leads and supervises staff, participates in hiring and training, assigns work and schedules, reviews reports, and ensures compliance with laws, policies, and standards.
- Maintains confidentiality of contacts, conversations, and information.
- Prepares and presents patrol shift briefings; may serve as Incident Commander for incidents; coordinates emergency responses and mutual aid; participates in risk assessments and safety reviews; testifies in various courts as required; participates in student integrity hearings.
- Fulfills duties of various police-related roles as assigned; responds to emergencies, directs traffic, sets up safety barriers, and maintains equipment proficiency.
- Liaises with local, state, and federal agencies to improve joint responses and support investigations and training.
- Contributes to operational planning for daily activities, emergencies, campus events, and approved plans.
- Performs scheduled work, including potential weekend, holiday, and overtime shifts; may rotate days off and reassignments to specialized units.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED
- Four (4) years of experience as a GAPOST-certified peace officer, or equivalent certification with a similar record
- Unblemished record of prior termination/resignation in lieu of termination, investigation, suspension, probation, delinquent training, or unpaid fees
- Meets GAPOST Peace Officer Basic Mandate Academy admission qualifications
- Completes GAPOST certification training within one year of employment or has equivalent training
- Completes pre-employment checks (criminal history, background, physical, drug test, fitness test if applicable, polygraph, psychological, and credit history as required)
- Possesses and maintains a valid, unrestricted Georgia Driver's license
- 2-year/Associate or 4-year/Bachelor's degree
- Experience with GAPOST-recognized agencies within the last 12 months
- Three years of campus policing experience
- One year of First-Line Police Supervisor experience
- Criminal justice-related degree; POST certifications as listed
- Completion of FEMA training and current GAPOST annual training
- Clery Act Training and CSA training compliance
Proposed salary: $50,700 – $63,300. Salary offers depend on experience, qualifications, internal equity, and budget considerations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of police duties at first-line supervisor and manager levels, incident command, investigations, community policing, and related parking and safety services.
- Knowledge of professional and accreditation standards, supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
- Knowledge of criminal law, procedures, and protective service principles; ability to apply them across services and programs.
- Knowledge of public safety methods, investigation, apprehension, traffic control, records management, and custody of persons and property.
- Ability to maintain records, communicate effectively, and provide training as needed.
- Ability to administer CPR/AED, naloxone, and operate firearms and less-lethal devices safely.
- Ability to work under pressure, supervise staff, and develop training programs; maintain confidentiality and integrity.
- Ability to coordinate with other agencies and communicate clearly via radio and written formats.
