PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES PRIMARY DUTIES
  • Performs as a Surgical Technologist as assigned, including reviewing supplies and equipment, maintaining a sterile field, and assisting the surgical team by anticipating needs and passing instruments.
  • Assists in preparing patients for surgery, sets up surgical equipment prior to surgery, and prepares, positions.
  • Assists with cleaning the CVOR rooms for subsequent procedures.
  • Assists the surgeon in surgery by passing instruments, draping a sterile field, and may serve in the first or second scrub role during procedures.
  • Maintains sterile techniques, recognises breaks in technique, and takes steps to regain sterility.
  • Organises a sterile table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, medication, and solutions required for procedures.
  • Might assist a nurse with special assignments and works with a nurse and Education Coordinator.
  • Might transport patients or specimens as needed.
  • Preps patients on the CVOR table.
  • Practices proper safety techniques complying with hospital and department policies, and reports any mechanical or electrical equipment failure, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury accident to Manager.
  • Cardiovascular Operating Room – Expeditor Role
  • Completes case cart with all supplies and instruments required for scheduled cases at least 30 min prior to the subsequent start, retrieving supplies kept in specific OR locations needed for case.
  • Transports case cart from Cart Cart room to hallway outside suitable CVOR.
  • Provides all needed equipment for next case outside room before scheduled start.
  • Collects instruments used on previous case needed for next case and delivers to Instrument Tech for cleaning and sterilising.
  • After case delivers dirty cart/instruments to Cart Cart Tech.
  • At case’s end places unused clean supplies in the proper area.
  • Gets odd supplies and equipment not on preference card and enables change in preference card to reflect needed items.
  • Opens supplies and helps Scr‑tech with setting up room.
  • Removes any non‑essential equipment, returning it to the designated storage.
  • ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Other duties as assigned by supervision.
  • REQUIRED
    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
    PREFERRED
    • Certification in Surgical Technology.
    • Surgical Technologist with two (2) or more years of experience, and six months at Northside.
    • Visual colour acuity screening depending on role in specific units.
