Delinquent Tax Collector

The Tax Commissioner is an elected Constitutional Officer responsible for every phase of collecting property taxes, from processing property homestead exemption applications through preparation of the digest, billing, accounting, and disbursements. The Delinquent Tax Collector is responsible for collecting delinquent ad valorem taxes and fees from property owners. Primary duties include investigating the financial status of individuals and businesses, performing field investigations, seizing property, and issuing citations for the purposes of tax collection.

This position is also responsible for monitoring bankruptcy notices, dismissals, hearings, and motions to ensure timely legal action and the protection of tax liens.

Essential Duties
  • Investigate and research individuals and businesses for the purpose of tax collection and code compliance.
  • Maintain and understand current laws related to codes and compliance of same.
  • Perform independent field investigations to collect taxes, post levy notices, seize property and/or issue citations for the purpose of code enforcement and complete reports detailing findings.
  • Research property information by reviewing plans, accessing databases, and contacting other departments.
  • Prepare monthly lien filings, affidavits, and cancellations for appropriate authorities.
  • Review all documentation, accounts, notices for property tax sales and co-conduct auctions. Also review documents and claims related to post tax sale as it relates to excess funds.
  • Perform other duties similar in nature.
Grade

The grade for this position is B23(2).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree; AND
  • One year of tax or collections related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Job Requirements /Information
  • Valid Driver's License from state of residency.
  • Must be deputized as Ex-Officio Sheriff within 3 months of employment.
  • Due to the sensitive nature of this position, a background check is required to include motor vehicle & criminal histories.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Real Estate, Business, and/or Bankruptcy law.
