Overview
The Tax Commissioner is an elected Constitutional Officer responsible for every phase of collecting property taxes, processing property homestead exemption applications, preparation of the digest, billing, accounting and disbursements. Property taxes include those assessed on real estate, public utilities and ad valorem taxes on motor vehicles and mobile homes. As a tag agent of the State of Georgia, the Tax Commissioner is responsible for collections of all taxes, fees, and penalties for motor vehicles under Georgia Code.
The Tax Commissioner enforces all regulations mandated by the state. This position provides fiscal support for processing higher-level fiscal documents and serves as a liaison between the assigned section or division and other employees, external agencies, the general public, and other interested parties.
- Responds to inquiries from employees, vendors, and other interested parties regarding payment, purchase status, and related information
- Maintain fiduciary responsibilities
- Files and maintains financial records, logs, and forms
- Performs audits of financial activities and procedures
- Records, analyzes, verifies, reconciles, and reports financial transactions
- Performs data entry of information contained on financial documents
- Prepares a variety of reports related to financial activities
- Gathers data and information in support of budgetary preparation activities
- Performs a variety of clerical duties (typing, answering phones, filing, copying, faxing, mail distribution, etc.)
Job Requirements /Information
- Background check required due to the sensitive nature of this position
- Minimum:
High School Diploma or GED - Three years of bookkeeping, accounts payable and/or accounts receivable experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Basic accounting principles
- Applicable laws, rules, and regulations
- Researching and resolving financial discrepancies
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc.
- Microsoft Excel experience
