Pursuant to the provisions of the General Laws, Chapter 31, Section 29 and the revised Ordinances of the City of Methuen, Section 6-23, the Mayor announces the following vacancy:

The Sanitation / Zero Waste Coordinator serves as the primary liaison to contracted municipal solid waste (MSW) and recycling vendors, monitoring performance to ensure compliance with contractual service standards and addressing service issues through coordination and process improvements. This position develops and delivers public education programs on proper trash and recycling practices and maintains up-to-date sanitation information on the City’s website and social media platforms.

Responds to public inquiries and complaints, enforces applicable state and City laws and ordinances related to waste disposal and illegal dumping, and investigates non-compliance issues, issuing warnings, fines, or citations when necessary. The position collects and analyzes data on trash and recycling volumes to identify trends and improve program performance, develops initiatives that promote waste reduction, recycling, composting and responsible disposal practices, and prepares reports for City leadership.

Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations and adjusts local programs as needed.

Five (5) years of experience in sanitation or public health-related work is preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. An associate or bachelor’s degree is preferred. Candidates must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver's License. The ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and exercise sound judgment is required. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
