District OverviewThe Fire & Life Safety (FLS) Engineering Department primarily supports Kiewit’s power generation, infrastructure, industrial and water projects across all of North America. The FLS department is the go-to department for all fire protection and life safety related matters, requiring a wide range of skills from site layout, code analysis, detailed design to construction administration.
LocationThis position is based at either the Lenexa, Kansas or Lone Tree, Colorado office. Relocation is available to the district office in Lenexa, Kansas.
Responsibilities- Provide fire protection and life safety design, analysis, and construction support for industrial facilities.
- Perform fire hazard analysis for the site to determine hazards and appropriate active and passive fire protection schemes in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and contract requirements.
- Generate calculations to size water supply, fire pumps, and underground pipe sizing.
- Develop subcontractor scope of work packages based on the fire hazard analysis and calculations.
- Award and manage subcontractors according to the developed scope of work packages.
- Review subcontractor fire suppression and fire alarm system plans and calculations.
- Review fire barrier and penetration seal requirements for specific hazards.
- Perform life safety reviews for buildings and industrial equipment areas.
- Travel is required (approximately 10% of the time) to meet with clients and/or job site personnel as needed.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or related field. EIT preferred.
- 5 years minimum relevant experience in fire protection and life safety design/analysis and construction support for industrial, power, or similar type facilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey concepts and requirements to team members and clients.
- High level of self-discipline, motivation, and teamwork with a willingness to get the job done right the first time.
- Proficiency with NFPA codes and standards: 13, 14, 20, 22, 24, 72, 101.
- Proficiency with the International Building Code and International Fire Code.
- Familiarity with NFPA 850 and NFPA 2001 preferred.
- Ability to navigate local code requirements, other NFPA standards, and FM data sheets as needed.
- Construction administration experience preferred.
- Work during normal operating hours to complete work within given deadlines; overtime is possible as needed.
- Regular, reliable attendance and timely completion of tasks.
- Effective communication and professional interaction with supervisors, employees, and others.
- Work safely and effectively, following oral and written instructions, warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
- Work at various locations; conditions may vary. Overtime and weekend work may be required.
Base Compensation: $115,000 – $156,000 (actual compensation varies with education, experience, skillset, and location).
