Position: Fire Life Safety Engineer

Position Overview

We are adding Mid to senior level Fire Protection Design Engineers to our Industrial Engineering team. We are one of North’s largest and most respected engineering and construction organizations with more than 3,600 engineers and design professionals. Our construction-driven engineering focuses on constructability and safety in the earliest phases of projects to ensure on-time and on budget delivery.

The Fire & Life Safety (FLS) Engineering Department primarily supports Kiewit’s power generation, infrastructure, industrial and water work across North America. The department is the go-to for all things fire protection and life safety within the organization, requiring engineers to apply skills ranging from site layout considerations to code analysis, detailed design and construction administration across various methods (design-build, EPC, etc.).

The engineers are involved from estimate through award, through construction, managing subcontractors and serving as responsible engineers on projects.

District Overview

Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering is a full-service consulting firm serving infrastructure and engineering markets, with 1,700+ engineers. Our Industrial Design Group includes diverse disciplines and focuses on EPC and design-build delivery for Data Centers, Mining, Water/Wastewater and Campus Energy projects. The fire protection group directly supports our infrastructure and power generation teams, exposing engineers to a variety of project types.

Location

This position is based at either the Lenexa, Kansas or Lone Tree, Colorado office. Consideration may be given to individuals near other Kiewit offices in the US. We offer relocation to the Lenexa office.

Responsibilities
  • Provide fire protection and life safety design, analysis, and construction support for industrial facilities.
  • Perform fire hazard analysis to determine hazards and appropriate fire protection schemes per applicable codes, standards, and contract requirements.
  • Generate calculations to size water supply, fire pumps, and underground pipe sizing.
  • Develop subcontractor scope of work packages based on the hazard analysis and calculations.
  • Award and manage subcontractors based on the scope of work packages.
  • Review subcontractor fire suppression and fire alarm system plans and calculations.
  • Review fire barrier and penetration seal requirements for specific hazards.
  • Perform life safety reviews for buildings and industrial equipment areas.
  • Travel is required (~10% of the time) to meet with clients and/or job site personnel as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or related field; EIT preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in fire protection and life safety design/analysis and construction support for industrial, power or similar facilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey concepts and requirements to team members and clients.
  • High level of self‑discipline, motivation, teamwork, and willingness to complete work correctly the first time.
Other Requirements
  • Proficiency with NFPA codes 13, 14, 20, 22, 24, 72, 101.
  • Proficiency with the International Building Code and International Fire Code.
  • Prefer familiarity with NFPA 850 and NFPA 2001.
  • Ability to navigate local code requirements, NFPA standards and related criteria such as FM data sheets as needed.
  • Construction administration experience preferred.
  • Work during normal operating hours; overtime and weekends possible.
  • Regular, reliable attendance and effective communication with supervisors, employees and other stakeholders.
  • Perform work safely and follow all oral and written instructions, safety signs, equipment use and company policies.

Base Compensation: $100,000/yr - $104,000/yr (actual compensation may vary by education, experience, skillset and location).
