Overview
As a member of the military, Construction Engineers provide engineering support, such as facilities management, fire engineering, contract and project management, and construction and environmental engineering.

As members of the Military Engineer Branch, Construction Engineers plan, develop, and implement projects involving a wide range of military engineering tasks. Their primary responsibilities are to:

  • Prepare or approve construction drawings, designs, and cost estimates
  • Advise superiors on military engineering matters
  • Exercise leadership and technical control over organizations involved in engineering services
  • Provide mapping, charting, and geodesic support to sea, land, and air operations
  • Lead and manage a team of skilled personnel

Work environment
Construction Engineers work as part of a Construction Engineering Flight or Unit. They primarily support the Royal Canadian Air Force but may also support Canadian Army operations and missions. After gaining practical experience, they may be posted to a CAF base or headquarters and could be deployed on domestic or international missions, including UN, NATO, or Coalition operations.

If you join the Regular Force, after completing all required training, you'll be assigned to your first base, with possible relocations. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you'll serve part-time at a Reserve unit, with minimal obligations outside training, and may volunteer for deployment.

Entry plans
Options include direct entry and paid education programs. If you already have a university degree, the CAF may place you directly into on-the-job training after basic training. The Regular Officer Training Plan involves studying at the Royal Military College System, with the CAF paying for your degree in exchange for a service commitment.

Training
Basic officer training lasts 12 weeks at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, covering military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons, and first aid. Following this, language training and further technical training at Gagetown will prepare you for engineering roles, including leading engineering projects and managing infrastructure.

Part-time options
Available through the Primary Reserve at various locations, serving part-time at a community-based unit, with opportunities for deployment and full-time service. Training lasts about 11 months at Gagetown, with pay and benefits comparable to the Regular Force.
