OVERVIEW

The Mill worker is responsible for performing a variety of tasks to facilitate daily operations throughout the manufacturing process. Tasks include loading and unloading raw materials, assembling, fabricating and correctly moving wood pieces through the manufacturing process. Mill workers are cooperative and eager to apply their skills in a variety of areas, regularly changing jobs to achieve success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Handcrafted door manufacturing
  • Plan joints, assemble parts and perform partial assemblies
  • Sandblast wood surfaces
  • Reinforce joints in casements
  • Operate woodworking machines such as power saws, varlopes, mortisers, shapers and use hand tools to cut, shape and form parts
  • Finishing touches on surfaces
  • Study plans, specifications or drawings of items to be manufactured, or prepare specifications
  • Mark outlines or dimensions of parts on wood
  • Use woodworking machines, such as power saws, jointers, mortisers and routers, and hand tools to cut, shape and form parts and components
  • Trim joints and assemble parts and subassemblies to form a complete unit using glue and clamps, and reinforce joints using nails, screws or other fasteners
  • Sand wood surfaces and apply veneer, stain or varnish to finished products
  • Repair or remodel wood accessories and related products
  • Estimate the quantity, type and cost of materials required.
KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Be able to take accurate measurements using a tape measure and calipers.
  • Use hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
  • Must have basic reading and writing skills.
  • Must be able to add and subtract fractions and whole numbers and convert fractions to decimals.
  • Ability to read, follow and understand written and oral work instructions.
  • Ability to diagnose and carry out minor wood repairs.
  • Ability to read, follow and understand work instructions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Lifting 1-30 lbs. frequently (up to 50% per 10-hour day)
  • Lifting 30-60# regularly (up to 30% of a 10-hour day)
  • Lifting 60+# occasionally (up to 25% of a 10-hour day)
  • Pushing/pulling 100# with help rarely (up to 13% in a 10-hour day)
  • Kneeling occasionally (up to 25% in a 10-hour day)
  • Occasional squatting (up to 25% in a 10-hour day)
  • Frequent bending (up to 25% in a 10-hour day)
  • Working with arms outstretched infrequently (up to 13% in a 10-hour day)
  • Standing in the same place for long periods of time
  • Working in an environment that can be hot or cold, noisy and/or dusty.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • A high school diploma is generally required.
  • A four-year apprenticeship program or a combination of more than four years' work experience in the trade and some high school or university courses.
  • Red Seal or trade certification is considered an asset.
