Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research is looking to fill our part‑time Lab Assistant role. In this position you will be involved in the creation of wiring used in lot release testing. You will also be involved in repurposing used materials to be used in different types of testing. This is a great opportunity for motivated individuals who want a chance to work in a fast‑paced environment and learn some new skills, all within the Latrobe, PA area.

Training is provided!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare thermo conductor wire for building thermo conductors
  • Assemble thermo conductors by insulating the wire with ceramic beading
  • Weld contact tips on the wires to complete the assembly
  • Remove damaged beading
  • Cut existing thermo conductor wire
  • Weld a new tip at the end of the wire to complete repair
  • Occasionally work in the machine shop cutting and drilling to prepare for new rod/tube install
  • Occasionally mark‑up specimens either manually or with a laser engraver
  • Prepare specimens for gauging using sandpaper and other techniques
  • Precisely install string gauges on test specimens
  • Attach wires to gauges using a soldering iron
  • Use wire strippers, snips, precision squares, rulers, tweezers, soldering irons, and multimeters when appropriate
  • Occasional lifting, stooping, bending, walking
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned
Qualifications and Skills
  • Must be 16 years of age or more
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Steady hand
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Comfortability working with small tools and working in a hands‑on environment
  • Ability to stand, sit, or move around for prolonged periods of time
  • Part‑Time
