The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six divisions, including hospital-level inpatient psychiatric care for civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. It is the largest behavioral health complex in the state, with inpatient/residential care serving over 250 clients daily and about 400 outpatient clients per month.
The organization employs over 600 staff across all divisions to ensure high-quality treatment and care.
Why does the job exist? The psychiatric technician provides care and assistance to all patients in a hospital setting. This position is present on all units and all shifts to assist with patients’ basic needs, supporting nursing and treatment staff by relaying updates about symptoms and patient functioning to the treatment team.
ResponsibilitiesHow does it get done?
- Assist patients with Activities of Daily Living (e.g., cuing to eat, shower, attend activities).
- Assist in crisis situations and help de-escalate patients who may be symptomatic or agitated.
- Monitor patients and ensure safety, including completing checks at identified intervals up to one-to-one monitoring when required.
- Provide feedback to nursing staff and treatment teams regarding observed symptoms.
- Ensure the environment is clean and comfortable for all patients.
This position provides assistance to all patients admitted to the hospital division of NMBHI. Referrals come from counties across the state; the role supports patients who cannot have symptoms stabilized in a lower level of care.
Ideal Candidate- Experience Working With People Who Have Behavioral Health Diagnoses.
- Experience in assisting people with activities of daily living.

- Experience working in treatment teams.
High School Diploma and one (1) year of experience as it pertains to the essential duties of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.

Must successfully complete post-offer pre-employment background checks. Employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Successful completion of HIPAA requirements.
This position will work in an office setting with exposure to Visual Display Terminals, personal computers, and phone usage. The work is in a psychiatric hospital setting with patients who may have unpredictable behavior. The campus is tobacco-free/E-cigarette free as of 2015; no tobacco or E-Cigarette products are permitted on campus.
