Salary $16.50 - $24.75 Hourly
$34,320 - $51,480 Annually
This position is a Pay Band C2.

This posting is assigned to the Health Information Management Division (HIMD) of the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute (NMBHI). It includes inpatient services (psychiatric services, adolescent treatment services, long term care, forensic treatment) and comprehensive outpatient services. HIMD services include Assembly & Analysis, Coding, Release of Information, Geographical Census, Unit Clerks, and Health Record Storage Retrieval & Retention. The department also handles financial management activities related to coding of procedures/treatments for billing and auditing to verify record requirements for billing and compliance with applicable standards, rules, and regulations.

The department is responsible for HIPAA compliance.

Why does the job exist? Incumbent will be assigned to the HIMD within The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute at Las Vegas. The incumbent will be responsible for printing, editing, logging, and dissemination of transcribed health record documents and maintaining compliance with standards (Joint Commission, CMS, NCQA, NM Administrative Code). This role includes procuring storeroom requisitions for office supplies and form acquisition.

How does it get done? The position preserves the established system for active health records, maintains an efficient process for logging and filing health record documents, and retrieves documents on a daily basis. Receipt of documents must be acknowledged by signing the transcription log. Health records must be filed according to the most current active health record chart order the same day they are received.

Health records must be audited for missing documents, signatures, dates, and times. Records must be purged according to the current purge schedule. The individual will retrieve discharged health records daily. Perform other related duties as assigned, cross-train, and back up other department functions as assigned by the supervisor as deemed necessary.

Ideal Candidate

Experience in auditing confidential health records charts, monitoring and reporting the status of complete, accurate, and timely health record completion. Maintain precision with attention to detail. Experience working with HIPAA.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) months experience in a hospital setting using medical terminology, processing and maintaining a medical records system, and/or use of Microsoft Office programs and hospital clinical software. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience totaling three (3) months may substitute for the required experience.

Must possess a current drivers license and defensive driving certificate. Mandatory annual trainings.

Working Conditions

Work is mostly performed in areas dedicated to patient care and in an office environment. Exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive use of computers and other office equipment. The position necessitates extensive walking to and from various units in unpredictable weather conditions.
