Organization The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six divisions including hospital level inpatient psychiatric care for civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. It is the largest behavioral health complex in the state, with inpatient/residential care for over 250 New Mexicans daily and about 400 outpatient clients per month.
There are over 600 employees across all divisions of NMBHI to ensure high-quality treatment and care.
The position exists to support the APD Division in assessing mental health needs and to support patients, clients, and residents in collaboration with the treatment team to ensure safe and effective treatment plans, continuity of care, and successful discharges.
How does it get done?Responsibilities include providing clinical service assessments, evaluations and interventions, determining appropriate patient placement, and working closely with physicians and nursing staff to coordinate patient care.
Who are the customers?The position serves all patients admitted to the hospital division of NMBHI.
Ideal CandidateIdeal qualifications include experience working with people with behavioral health diagnoses; experience working in healthcare; and experience working in treatment teams.
Minimum QualificationRequirement High School diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience in a substance abuse and/or behavioral disorder counseling environment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Work environment This position works in an office setting with computer and phone usage. The work is performed in a psychiatric hospital setting with potential exposure to patients who struggle with mental illness and may exhibit unpredictable behavior. As of 01/01/2015, the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute became a 100% Tobacco Free/E-Cigarette Free Campus; no tobacco products or E-Cigarettes are permitted on any part of the campus.
