A drivability technician focuses on diagnosing and repairing vehicle performance issues, using advanced diagnostic tools to identify problems in engine management, fuel, ignition, and electrical systems. Key responsibilities include performing complex repairs, conducting emissions testing, test‑driving vehicles to confirm fixes, and documenting work. Strong problem‑solving skills, expertise with diagnostic software, and knowledge of automotive systems are essential qualifications.

Job responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair: Identify and fix issues related to engine efficiency, emissions, fuel injection, and electrical systems.
  • Use diagnostic tools: Utilize advanced scan tools, multimeters, and specialized software to interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and pinpoint problems.
  • Perform inspections and maintenance: Conduct comprehensive inspections, perform tune‑ups, replace faulty components, and complete necessary maintenance tasks.
  • Test drive vehicles: Take vehicles for test drives to confirm that all drivability concerns have been resolved and the vehicle is performing correctly.
  • Maintain records: Accurately document all diagnostic and repair work, including service records and warranty repairs.
  • Communicate with other staff: Collaborate with other technicians and service advisors to explain repairs and coordinate work.
  • Ensure compliance: Adhere to safety and environmental regulations and maintain a clean and organized workspace.
Required qualifications and skills
  • Education and certification: A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and formal automotive training or certification is highly beneficial. ASE certifications in engine performance or related areas are often necessary.
  • Technical expertise: A strong understanding of automotive electrical and engine systems is crucial.
  • Tool proficiency: Experience with and knowledge of advanced diagnostic equipment and software is a must.
  • Problem-solving: Excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting skills are essential for identifying complex problems.
  • Soft skills: Strong communication skills are needed to explain technical issues to customers and colleagues.
  • Must have a valid Driver License
  • Must be able to pass a background and pre‑employment drug screen.
  • Must be Ford Motor Company certified.
