The Nurse Practitioner (NP) has a specialized skill and knowledge related to the setting in which they practice. The NP performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders laboratory studies, prescribes interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services, according to established evidence-based clinical practice standards. The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and the advance practice profession.
Duties may include but are not limited to obtaining patient histories and complete physical examinations, documenting findings, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, performing procedures within the specialty area, and facilitating safe and efficient operational flow of patient care through the continuum of care. The NP functions as part of inter-professional teams by communicating, planning, and implementing care directly with other healthcare professionals.
The Nurse Practitioner also plays a leading role in managing clinic operations, patient rounding, nursing performance improvement, job performance evaluations, staffing, scheduling, and orientation and training of new employees. The NP executes leadership in Direct/Indirect Patient Care, Support of Systems, Research, Education, and Professional Leadership areas.
Essential Duties- Conduct in-depth interviews with patients and/or families, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and explore patient interpretation of health needs.
- Identify and treat patients’ diseases and manage treatment of hospitalized patients.
- Perform or order diagnostic studies and interpret finished results.
- Develop and implement long‑term and short‑term treatment plans.
- Perform procedures such as obtaining specimens, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of conditions produced by trauma or infection.
- Write orders to increase, decrease, or change medication, subject to physician check‑in and counter‑signing.
- Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
- Identify records pertinent to the progress of patients, update and summarize charts, change orders when appropriate, and notify the responsible physician of changes in the patient’s condition.
- Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical problems, psychological problems, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
- Act as liaison with governmental agencies such as the CDC and NIH, assist with medical research projects, and obtain IRB approval for treatment protocols.
- Research community resources for patient referrals and refer patients to the most appropriate resource based on medical needs and condition.
- Maintain compliance with established university and department policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control requirements, and accreditation and regulatory agency mandates.
- Participate in in‑service education programs and professional associations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree (MSN) graduate from an accredited school of Nursing.
- Five years of combined education/experience; substitute for minimum clinical nursing experience.
- If less than two years or 2,000 hours of clinical experience, Schedule II controlled substances may not be prescribed without a protocol approved by a collaborating physician.
- Excellent communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing in English).
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and ability to understand, follow, and successfully perform duties.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred; ability to understand and communicate with Spanish‑speaking individuals.
