Overview
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Head, Web and Application Development Services, UNLV University Libraries [ R0150024 ]. The Head leads Web and Application Development Services, a department responsible for designing, developing, customizing, deploying, and supporting the Libraries’ websites and web applications, including open source applications such as Islandora and Drupal, and related customizations.
This position serves as a department leader and technical manager, reporting to the Director, Library Technologies. It manages collaborative projects of varying size and scope, encouraging effective time management, communication, and creative problem-solving among project team members.
Responsibilities- Supervise, lead, mentor, and motivate 5 FTE administrative faculty (3 web developers; application developer; web content and user experience specialist). Set goals, define expectations, perform evaluations, encourage professional development, and plan, prioritize, and assign work.
- Identify, prioritize, and manage projects through all phases: define project scope; analyze stakeholder requirements; determine resources and constraints; develop project plans and timelines; foster shared ownership of deliverables; and provide regular stakeholder communication.
- Act as a liaison and facilitate effective communication between technical and non-technical colleagues. Train or familiarize library stakeholders on capabilities, processes, and workflows related to the web environment.
- Collaborate with department and other Libraries’ technical professionals to maintain web infrastructure, assess new software versions, systems, modules, and associated workflows.
- Help manage external vendor relationships used to support the Libraries’ web environment.
- Draft, provide guidance for, and contribute to clear and appropriate web-related documentation, instructions, and workflows. Ensure personnel compliance with coding standards, methods, guidelines, and documentation.
- Monitor and manage applications used to track project progress, troubleshoot issues, and related activities.
- Stay informed about developments in open-source communities (e.g., Drupal, Islandora, Archives Space) and collaborate with communities when beneficial to local operations.
- Knowledge of front-end technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and one or more current markup, style sheet, and/or scripting languages.
- Knowledge of back-end programming/scripting languages (e.g., PHP, Python).
- Knowledge of APIs and data formats (e.g., JSON, XML).
- Experience with professional web content management systems.
- Knowledge of software development practices, including source code management and experience with a version control repository.
- Knowledge of user-centered design and digital accessibility standards and requirements.
- Demonstrated project management experience with complex projects and diverse stakeholders.
- Experience guiding, directing, and motivating staff by setting performance standards, assessing performance, and coordinating and reviewing work.
- Experience creating and maintaining documentation (processes, standards, procedures, workflows).
- Experience with the Drupal content management system (page design, theming, plugin development, maintenance, administration).
- Experience with Islandora open source digital asset management system. Experience using Docker for automated deployment, scaling, and container management. Experience with Git Lab.
- Experience working with Google Sites and other Google enterprise applications.
- Knowledge of search engine optimization and website analytics tools, preferably Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager.
- Experience with emerging AI tools used to assist with code production, review, and debugging activities.
- Evidence of continued relevant learning or skills development via professional certifications or similar.
