Overview

The mission-critical, on-campus Assistant Director reports to the Director and oversees the comprehensive daily clinical and administrative operations within Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Responsibilities include driving departmental efficiency, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards (HIPAA, FERPA, licensing boards), and supporting student retention by optimizing service accessibility. The role includes direct oversight of clinical services, crisis intervention protocols, high-risk case management, and serving as the primary consultation point for campus partners during emergencies.

The Assistant Director provides clinical and operational supervision for all CAPS staff and oversees the Practicum Training Program. They lead strategic planning with the Director, manage the departmental budget, and represent CAPS on relevant college committees to enhance integrated care. The role also maintains a direct clinical caseload, develops preventative outreach and psycho educational programming, and acts as a change-oriented leader championing innovation and psychological resilience across the campus community.

Note:

This role requires consistent physical presence on campuses for direct oversight, crisis response, and essential in-person relationship building; remote or hybrid work is not available.

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in clinical/counseling psychology, social work, student development or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Active licensure in Nevada (LCSW, LCPC, LMFT) with at least 3 years of licensure experience.
  • Supervisory certification or qualifications to serve as an approved clinical supervisor within 90 days of hire.
  • 4 years of related progressive professional experience in counseling students (crisis intervention, suicide prevention, mental health services to diverse populations).
  • 2 years of leadership and supervisory experience guiding clinicians in high-stress situations.
  • Experience in grant writing/activities and directing comprehensive mental health services and prevention initiatives.
  • Experience providing short-term individual and group counseling; participation in BIT or equivalent meetings with post-intervention services.
  • Policy development and revision experience; knowledge of ethical and legal standards related to mental health practice and confidentiality.
  • Experience marketing mental health awareness and increasing visibility and accessibility of services.
  • Experience providing consultation for students, parents, faculty and staff; knowledge of EBPs and interventions; strong clinical, assessment, and intervention skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Crisis intervention experience; experience implementing peer education initiatives and annual trainings/programs in mental health prevention.
  • Experience with integrated program development, operating plans, budgets, policies, procedures, and standards aligned with college objectives.
  • Experience with development and management of state/federal program funds and grants.
  • Experience in brief therapy (psychodynamic orientation), crisis intervention, risk assessment, multicultural therapy, outreach, clinical supervision, program development, data analysis, and assessment.
  • Experience treating anxiety, depression, relationships, and trauma.

  • Empathetic, culturally sensitive approach to provide high-quality, evidence-based, culturally competent services to students.
  • Understanding of HIPAA and FERPA compliance; strong communication across organizational levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to apply evidence-based therapeutic techniques for a range of mental health concerns.
  • Excellent oral and written communication; ability to make independent decisions in diverse situations.
  • Ability to maintain a physical presence on campus for oversight, crisis response, and relationship building.
