Public Safety Dispatcher

Overview

University Police Department, Southern Command invites applications for Public Safety Dispatcher. UPD serves as the gateway to emergency personnel for NSHE Campuses in Clark County and coordinates responses with police, fire, medical and other emergency agencies. The dispatch center operates 24/7, 365 days a year, and handles after hours maintenance calls and contacts for the University.

• Receive, evaluate, prioritize and dispatch public safety calls for service.
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls in a timely and appropriate manner.
• Operate a variety of communications equipment including radio, telephone, telephony, TDD and multiple computer systems; relay data into the CAD program.
• Access and correlate information from NCIC and NCJIS to provide criminal history information as needed.
• Monitor fire and burglar alarms and access campus CCTV/security video cameras.
• Support daily operations of the dispatch center and coordinate with emergency responders.

Required Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent; or:

• Certification as a Public Safety Dispatcher; or
• One year of experience as a Senior Communications Call Taker in Nevada State service.

Education, Experience, and Skills
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (required at time of application):

• Detailed knowledge of criminal justice information systems and dispatch center functions.
• Working knowledge of security, confidentiality and privacy regulations; geography and agency procedures; law enforcement terminology related to dispatch.
• Ability to handle high volume radio/telephone traffic; work independently; respond accurately using CJIS; recognize emergencies and take appropriate action.
• Familiarity with NCIC/NCJIS and associated data access.

Special Requirements

• Pre-employment substance screening; background checks; and other employee screenings as required by NSHE/UNLV.
• Evenings, weekends and/or holidays work may be required; valid driver’s license required.

• Strong customer service orientation; excellent management and organizational skills; excellent communication skills.
• Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and maintain confidentiality.

• Public Safety Dispatcher - Grade 33 Step 1, salary $59,842.08. Step is a rate within a grade; initial appointments typically begin at Step 1.
