The University Of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applications for a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Social & Behavioral Health in the School of Public Health.

Role of the Position

The department chair, as academic component leader, facilitates the management of the department and oversees, directly or indirectly, the daily progress toward teaching, research, service, and strategic goals. The chair represents the department, advocates for its interests, and balances departmental goals with the School/Dean’s Office, students, and market demands. The chair also stewardes day-to-day operations while maintaining reduced teaching load and continuing to publish.

Expectations

of the Department Chair
  • Maintain a collegial environment where all members feel valued, have a voice, and share ownership in the program/department.
  • Be a liaison between the department and the Dean; communicate the department’s issues, perspectives, and decisions to the Dean/School/University; balance departmental goals with School/Dean’s Office, students, and market demands.
  • Be a team player and a big-picture thinker; lead in developing and implementing immediate and long-range departmental goals and strategies to meet University and School goals, including enrollment and retention initiatives; participate in the School’s Academic Leadership Team; be a visible and accessible leader in the office on campus.
  • Lead the department in curricular enhancements and instructional initiatives, ensure balanced course offerings, support faculty development and curriculum improvement, and collaborate with the Dean on financial/budgetary needs.
  • Establish advisory boards, ensure policy implementation, coordinate activities within the Department (assessment, accreditation, and initiatives), recruit and retain faculty, and manage faculty hiring processes and performance evaluations.
  • Support diversity and inclusion, monitor student academic progress, oversee records, supervise staff, preside over department meetings, and serve as the primary contact for recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal professionalism and be available to address issues; perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.

  • Increase in enrollment and retention; progress toward tenure, promotion, and performance goals; contribute to the School of Public Health’s advancement.
Profile of the Department

The department comprises research-intensive faculty with significant NIH funding and expertise in areas such as early childhood development, obesity prevention, breastfeeding, aging-related health, ethics in genetics, global health, housing, LGBTQIA health, substance misuse, youth health, sexuality education, children’s health, and health disparities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Behavior, Community Health, or related fields from an accredited institution, with leadership experience (e.g., Graduate Coordinator, Program Coordinator, or Center Director).
  • Experience mentoring junior faculty, a strong portfolio of external funding, and work with diverse communities to address health disparities. Credentials must be obtained prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as Departmental Chair and research expertise in health communications, mixed methods, or qualitative designs.
