The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for the Academic Advisor position in the Division of Health Sciences Advising Center [R0150467].

ROLE of the POSITION

Academic Advisor positions are responsible for providing academic advising to undergraduate students in individual and group advising settings. The Academic Advisor provides expertise in degree requirements and may be involved with representing the advising center at events and other assigned special projects geared to enhance student success. The Academic Advisor must have/develop knowledge of general core requirements for each major within the Division of Health Sciences as well as policies and procedures of the university.

Academic Advisors must be familiar with admissions, registration systems and financial aid processes to assist students. Skills also include the utilization of professional judgment in assisting students with choosing/confirming an area of study and determining the appropriate courses for the degree. Having the ability to develop and deliver presentations as well as articulate and convey policies and procedures are essential functions.

Under the supervision of advising center leadership, the Academic Advisor position must possess professional and social skills and be responsive to work closely with faculty, staff, students and parents/families from diverse backgrounds. The Academic Advisor position is expected to work on-campus and to meet with students in-person, as well as conduct virtual and phone advising as requested by students.

The Academic Advisor will be highly functional with regard to decision-making and problem solving skills. Effective time management and ability to balance a wide variety of tasks and student caseloads in an efficient and effective manner are vital to the success of this position. It is essential that this person adhere to student confidentiality guidelines (FERPA) and possess a high regard for ethics.

Knowledge of other technologies related to academic advising and presentations is preferred.

Academic Advisors will utilize proactive advising practices. Proactive advising includes coordinated, collaborative, personalized, and intentional outreach strategies and practices designed to anticipate potential barriers to student success, provide timely interventions, and invite meaningful engagement between advisors and students. By anticipating barriers, providing interventions, and inviting engagement, proactive advising strategies and practices support improved student experiences and outcomes.

PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE

This advising position will serve the Division of Health Sciences Advising Center (working with the following schools: Integrated Health, Nursing and Public Health), part of the Student Success team. The Student Success team is responsible for leading campus-wide initiatives that support enrollment growth and equitable student success through academic and student success programming to promote retention, progression, timely degree completion, and career readiness while closing achievement gaps.

Student and Academic Success teams work closely with department chairs and faculty across the campus to support student academic success efforts, the implementation of student-centered and equitable academic advising practices, and deliver impactful student academic support programming from First-Year Experience through graduation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and one year of experience in a field related to academic advising
. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.
