Overview
University Police Department, Southern Command invites applications for Public Safety Dispatcher. We appreciate your interest in employment at our growing division.
The UPD provides emergency coordination for NSHE Campuses in Clark County. Dispatchers gather information, evaluate, prioritize and dispatch calls for service, and respond to emergency and non-emergency situations 24/7/365. They operate various communications equipment and may access NCIC/NCJIS to provide necessary information for university safety operations.
Responsibilities- Receive, evaluate, prioritize and dispatch public safety calls for service and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Operate a variety of communications equipment including radio, telephone, telephony, TDD and multiple computer systems; relay data into the CAD program.
- Access and correlate information from NCIC and NCJIS to provide criminal history information when needed.
- Monitor campus fire and burglar alarms; access CCTV/security video cameras; support 24/7 dispatch operations and after-hours maintenance contacts.
The department is a full-service police department with patrol operations, administration, police dispatch and a detective division, including canine, walking/bicycle patrols and a proactive traffic program. UPD serves UNLV, College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute and Nevada State College. The unit employs around 120 staff and serves approximately 80,000 students, faculty and staff over an 800 square mile area.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent; OR certified Public Safety Dispatcher; OR one year of experience as a Senior Communications Call Taker in Nevada State service.

Skills and Abilities
(required at time of application):
- Detailed knowledge of criminal justice information systems and communications center functions.
- Working knowledge of security, confidentiality and privacy regulations; equipment maintenance; geography of Nevada; agency procedures and terminology; computer-aided dispatch operations.
- Ability to handle high-volume radio/telephone/telecommunication traffic; work independently; recognize emergencies and take appropriate action; accurately use CJIS systems; interpret law enforcement terminology; and other listed abilities.
- Pre-employment screening for controlled substances; positions may require evenings, weekends and/or holidays; background checks (State of Nevada/FBI) and fingerprinting.
- A valid driver’s license is required at appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
- NCIC certification within six months of appointment with recertification every two years.
- Minimum typing speed as established by the agency at recruitment time.
- Strong customer service orientation; excellent management/organizational and communication skills; ability to multi-task, problem solve and maintain confidentiality.
Public Safety Dispatcher - Grade 33 Step 1, salary $59,842.08. Step denotes a pay rate within a grade; initial appointments typically begin at Step 1 per NAC 284.170.
