Job Description

Purpose Summary. Perform skilled mechanical, electrical, and technical work to maintain, diagnose, and repair a wide range of emergency response vehicles and equipment, including fire apparatus, ambulances, and support units. Ensure operational readiness by conducting comprehensive inspections, completing preventative and corrective maintenance, and addressing complex mechanical system issues.
Essential Duties- Emergency Vehicle Maintenance and Repair — Perform repairs, overhauls, and preventative maintenance on fire apparatus, ambulances, support vehicles, and firefighting equipment. Service fire pumps, valves, and associated plumbing. Repair and maintain drive trains, cab and chassis components, and hydraulic systems. Maintain and repair auxiliary power generators. Diagnose and repair electrical systems, emergency lighting, sirens, and aerial ladders. Service and repair diesel and gasoline engines.
Diagnose, inspect, install, and replace vehicle heating and air conditioning systems and components using proper tools and equipment. Service and repair of air brake components and air system assemblies. - Diagnostics and Testing — Diagnose and repair malfunctioning vehicle computer components. Operate diagnostic and testing equipment to evaluate components, pressures, engine performance, and emissions, and make necessary adjustments. Road test vehicles and equipment to verify proper operation before returning them to the customer.
- Equipment Fabrication and Modification — Modify, fabricate, and install special equipment as needed. Work at elevated levels to inspect, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on aerial ladders.
- Recordkeeping and Inventory — Maintain accurate records of materials used and time spent on each assigned work order. Maintain the service truck, including inventory of assigned tools and parts.
- Routine and Preventative Maintenance — Perform scheduled, emergency, and preventative maintenance tasks, including checking fluid levels and tire pressure, lubricating moving parts, and changing coolant, oil, fluids, and filters. Dismount and mount automotive tires and perform necessary tire repairs or replacements. Remove truck and heavy equipment tires for outside vendor repair or replacement.
- Leadership and Coordination — Coordinate and prioritize daily maintenance and repair activities. Serve as a point of contact for complex technical issues, working collaboratively with supervisors, operations staff, and external vendors to resolve.
- Additional Duties — Other duties as assigned. Requires flexibility to work outside standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Position may require participation in an on-call rotation.
A. Education. Associate degree from an accredited college or university in diesel and/or automotive technology.
B. Experience. Three (3) years of experience as heavy equipment or heavy construction equipment mechanic.
C. Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County Policy.
D. Licenses/Certifications. Must have a valid unrestricted driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License Class A with Haz Mat/Tanker endorsement within the first year of employment. Must possess ASE certifications T4, T5, A4, and A5 at the time of hire. Must obtain EVT certifications F1, F2, E0, E1 within (2) years of hire. Must possess an Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC) within one year of hire.
E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.). Must pass pre-employment background check and driving record check. Must comply with the drug and alcohol Clearinghouse requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
