Job DescriptionAssists in the installation, repair, and servicing of water main and service lines, water wells, booster stations, and water meters. Performs building, equipment, and grounds maintenance and repair.
Work is performed outdoors with exposure to noise, dust, dirt, open manholes, street cave-ins, chemicals, and gases. Safety equipment required includes safety shoes, vest, ear plugs, sound attenuator, hard hat, and gloves.
Nature of WorkAssists in the installation, repair, and servicing of water main and service lines, water wells, booster stations, and water meters. Performs building, equipment, and grounds maintenance and repair.
Environmental and Physical FactorsWork is outdoors with exposure to various environmental hazards. Heavy physical work is required, including lifting over 50 pounds, balancing, bending, climbing, and reaching. Body agility and visual and auditory acuity are necessary.
Work Situation FactorsShift work, holidays, weekends, nights, overtime, and standby may be involved. Emergency response and strict adherence to safety and attendance policies are required. The position is subject to drug testing.
Additional InformationFirst consideration will be given to current City of Las Cruces employees who meet all minimum requirements. Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee participation in the process. This position is for a full-time, contract role in the Utilities Department, graded at BC08.
Duties and Responsibilities- Install, service, clean, and repair water lines; complete work reports.
- Install and replace meters; prepare reading cards; report on work requests.
- Dig manholes, locate meters and valves, support senior workers.
- Unplug water services, maintain fire hydrants, install service lines.
- Respond to public questions, assist in operation and maintenance of water systems, maintain yards and facilities, perform yard and weed control.
High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in construction, maintenance, or related fields. Water system experience is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required, with Class A CDL and NM Water Certifications to be obtained within specified time frames.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of safety regulations, water systems operations, construction and repair methods, record keeping, research, customer service, safety practices, and computer skills. Ability to perform physical tasks, operate equipment, communicate effectively, and work independently or in a team.
