The Locator, under the direction of a company supervisor, performs work that involves visual inspection of predefined construction areas. Locators read and interpret utility maps to determine the presence of underground utilities, while using special electronic equipment to detect and locate utilities.

The utilities may include (but not be limited to) gas, electric, cable TV, telecommunications, sanitary sewer, water lines, street lighting and other facilities within the predefined construction area.

What You’ll Do
  • Read and interpret utility maps/prints to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
  • Operate different electronic detection equipment to locate and mark underground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits.
  • Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel regarding underground facilities.
  • Perform light excavation with a shovel to expose buried utilities when necessary.
  • Provide accurate documentation and/or sketches related to all locates completed.
  • Receive and respond to excavation notices during normal and after hours in accordance with established time requirements.
  • Use a computer or other device to receive, document and close out excavation notices.
  • Respond to emergency calls between the hours of 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
  • Work weekends, night work and/or overnight travel as needed.
  • Operate company vehicles in a safe manner and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Perform manhole entry using assigned equipment and safety devices.
What You’ll Need
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Authorized to work in the United States for this company.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid standard Driver’s License or Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • A MVR record deemed acceptable by the company.
  • Proficient use of hand tools and equipment (shovels, screw drivers, wrenches, and pipe keys etc.).
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
Other Requirements
  • Pass a background check and company drug screening.
  • Attend and pass all company required training as needed.
  • May be required to work overtime, after hours, on weekends or be on‑call as work is needed.
  • Must be minimum 18 years old to drive company vehicles/operate company equipment.
  • May include working nights and holidays.
  • May be required to travel within state as necessary to meet business and job requirements.
  • Regular and timely attendance is an essential function of this position.
Physical & Safety Requirements And The Working Environment
  • Duties will require standing, crouching, sitting, bending, using hands and fingers to handle or feel as well as reaching with hands and arms to spaces both high and low. Standing, walking, climbing, balancing, crawling, crouching, lifting, holding or stooping a moderate amount of time while on shift.
  • Noise level in the work environment is moderate.
  • Employees will be regularly exposed to outside weather conditions which can include extreme heat and cold temperatures; inclement weather such as rain, snow, sleet and dust; adverse driving conditions including wet roads, icy roads, and fog.
  • Employees may be required to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Employees may be exposed to dust, fumes or other airborne pathogens.
  • Employees may be exposed to toxic or corrosive chemicals as well as moving machinery parts and pieces.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus potentially near and/or far as needed.
