Position: Veterinarian - Animal Control*EXTENDED*

$10,000 Sign on Bonus and $10,000 after completing one-year probationary period

Provide high volume spay and neuter services to pet owners of Dona Ana County. Work will be performed at either County facilities, or the Dona Ana County mobile spay/neuter clinic for use in remote areas of the County. Under nominal supervision performs technical animal health care duties and technical support for small animals and livestock that have been quarantined as evidence.

Coordinate inoculation of animals in Dona Ana County’s rural areas.

Responsibilities
  • Manage Live Evidence Technician Staff. Tasks include but are not limited to:
    • Develop goals and objectives.
    • Approve selection of staff, provide daily supervision, write, and conduct performance evaluations and when necessary, implement discipline.
    • Develop and participate in departmental in-house training.
    • Promote and maintain the humane care and treatment of animals. Tasks include but are not limited to:
    • Perform high volume spay and neuter and provide post operative care.
    • Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases and disorders of animals in quarantine.
    • Administer immunizations.
    • Provide emergency veterinary treatment, including surgery, to animals as required.
    • Restrain animals for and during treatment and move animals to and from cages.
    • Examine animals to assess general physical condition and euthanize when necessary.
    • Perform necropsies as needed and/or prepare specimens for laboratory testing.
    • Oversee maintenance of animal care facilities and recordkeeping of animals. Tasks include but are not limited to:
    • Develop procedures for maintenance and recordkeeping of animals for approval by Animal Control Manager, and regularly provides recommendations to keep procedures updated.
    • Prepare and maintain accurate records of procedures and case files for animals.
    • Entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic form.
    • Ability to understand and report statistical information needed from services rendered to the community and in-house.
    • Ensures compliance with, including but not limited to, all applicable State and Federal regulatory agencies such as the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Drug Enforcement Agency, Centers for Disease Control, etc.
    • Responsible for obtaining the annual Court Hold facility license as required by the Veterinary Board.
    • Keep abreast of developments in the field of veterinary medicine and stay technically current through required training.
    • Assist as requested with public relations and media releases.
    • Participate and represent the department in various working groups, committees, community groups and public meetings.
    • Document all activities regarding care/custody and provide testimony about animals held as evidence in court cases as required.
    • Develop materials and curricula to educate the public about animal regulations and humane care and treatment of animals. Serve as subject matter expert for health and welfare of animals in Dona Ana County. Tasks include but are not limited to:

    Qualifications

    Education. Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

    Experience. One (1) year experience as a veterinarian. Working in an animal shelter environment with domesticated animals and/or livestock preferred.

    Licenses/Certifications. Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of NM.

    Other Background check, driver’s license record check. Must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required by the Position:

    Professional knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices of veterinary medical science sufficient to: manage and provide veterinary medical/surgical care through regular monitoring of animal and colony health; provide therapeutic medicine, surgery, and coverage of veterinary emergencies as needed; provide preventive medicine programs, including quarantining, conditioning, and isolating animals as necessary, and developing and coordinating section environmental sanitation programs; and develop plans and recommendations for improving animal care practices at the facility.

    Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary principles of supervision of others. Skills in handling animals, communicating effectively with the public, and establishing effective working relationships with others.
