Position

We are now hiring a Full‑Time Behavior Support Consultant (BSC) to provide support in Las Cruces, NM
. The BSC is a qualified mental health professional responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, training, and monitoring positive behavior supports for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD). The BSC collaborates with the individual, guardian (if applicable), and the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) to enhance quality of life, reduce behaviors that interfere with desired outcomes, and ensure compliance with all DDSD and DD Waiver service standards.

Services may be delivered in person, via telehealth/telephonic methods, or through a hybrid approach, with required in‑person home visits occurring at least quarterly.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct initial and annual Positive Behavior Support Assessments (PBSA), including required face‑to‑face evaluations
  • Develop and maintain Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSP), Behavioral Crisis Intervention Plans (BCIP), Psychotropic Medication Plans (PPMP), Risk Management Plans (RMP), as applicable
  • Ensure all assessments and plans comply with DDSD standards and the “Beyond the ABCs” training requirements
  • Guide the individual and IDT in understanding behavioral contributing factors, including developmental and physiological factors, trauma history, co‑occurring mental health conditions, communication needs, and environmental influences
  • Monitor progress through direct observation, data review, staff interviews, in‑person and telehealth visits
  • Provide training and ongoing technical assistance to IDT members, Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), and designated trainers; conduct follow‑up observations and retraining within 30 calendar days when indicated
  • Collaborate with provider agencies to integrate PBSP strategies into Teaching and Support Strategies (TSS)
  • Attend required meetings with IDT, Individual Support Plan (ISP), and Human Rights Committee (HRC)
  • Advocate for supports that are non‑aversive, least restrictive, and free from abuse, neglect, or exploitation
  • Participate in psychiatric appointments when clinically indicated
  • Support implementation of the Comprehensive Aspiration Risk Management Plan (CARMP)
  • Promptly report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation in accordance with Chapter 18.2 requirements
  • Provide quarterly in‑person home visits; remote services may supplement but may not fully replace in‑person services unless under a declared public health emergency
  • Be available for timely revisions to assessments, plans, and required reports
  • Additional tasks and responsibilities may be assigned
Minimum Requirements

The BSC must possess one of the following licenses approved by a specific licensing board:

Independent Practice License:

  • Psychologist
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)
  • Licensed Professional Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LPCC)
  • Licensed Professional Art Therapist (LPAT)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
  • Psychiatric Nurse (Master’s degree)

OR

Supervisory‑Level Practice License (approved annually):

  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
  • Psychologist Associate (PA)

Professionals licensed at the supervisory level must receive direct clinical supervision by an independently licensed mental health professional, with approval renewed annually by the BBS Bureau Chief, Clinical Director, or designee.

Clinical

Experience with Individuals with I/DD
  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience working with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD)

OR

  • A combination of relevant education, internship, familial, or volunteer experience may be accepted in exceptional circumstances with prior written approval from DDSD
  • Professionals without prior I/DD experience must receive clinical supervision by an independently licensed BSC for a minimum of one year, regardless of licensure level
