Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Ferry Mechanic performs preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and modifications on structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, piping and control systems found on ferry vessels and passenger terminals. Responsibilities include record keeping and written verification of work accomplished.
Salary Range- Day Shift: $56.32 per hour
- Swing Shift: $56.32 per hour + 10% differential pay
- Graveyard Shift: $56.32 per hour + 15% differential pay

- Work with computers daily for scheduling, work order entry, and reporting on the District’s electronic maintenance system.
- Conduct tests, analyses, and measurements to diagnose issues in shipboard or terminal systems.
- Report unusual wear patterns, noise, pressure, temperature, voltage, current, cycles, resistance, or any change indicating potential malfunction.
- Reference manufacturer schematics, blueprints, drawings, and specifications to resolve maintenance issues.
- Reference parts catalogs and other sources to determine correct parts.
- Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, and overhauls as directed.
- Document and record work performed and parts and materials used in the electronic maintenance system.
- Report all safety hazards and correct unsafe situations immediately where possible.
- Immediately report to supervisor any maintenance problem or condition that could cause a schedule delay.
- Maintain work areas, tools, and equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
- Operate a forklift and other equipment/vehicles safely.
- Interact regularly with vessel operations personnel.
- Adhere to safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to the job.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors, and others using excellent customer service principles.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance and performance.
Education and/or
Experience:
- Completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program, or approved equivalent as a heavy equipment or marine mechanic, OR four (4) years of progressively responsible journey‑level full‑time work experience in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, including mechanical, electrical or welding repair, and at least one year in an industrial environment.
- Experience in corrective and preventive maintenance records using a computer‑based maintenance management information system.
- Experience using MS Windows‑based software for data entry, work order processing, and materials requisitioning.
Required License:
- Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record (operates District vehicles).
- No DUI’s or reckless driving codes within the last 7 years.
- No more than two moving violations within the last 3 years.
Required Tools:
- Must have a full set of journey‑level hand tools to accomplish assigned work.
Hours:
- Shifts are scheduled based on seniority.
- The Ferry Maintenance Department operates 7 days per week, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
