OPS Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Specialist:
School Based Health Clinics

The Department of Health in Pinellas has a Licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse open in the Medical Services Program. The successful candidate will work in assigned School-Based Health Clinics, as well as various programmatic areas when needed within the scope of Agency protocols, State, and Federal Guidelines. The APRN’s medical competence, medical judgment and general practice of medicine will be evaluated through peer review.

Monitoring and oversight will include, but is not limited to, an established quality improvement process with ongoing chart review. The APRN’s immediate supervisor is functionally responsible for evaluation of all standards and expectations and will facilitate access to medical consultations.

Your Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive health care to clients attending any of the 5 school-based health clinics
  • Conducts patient intake, vitals, and history when nurse is absent.
  • Administers medications and monitors special diet carb counting when nurse is absent.
  • Evaluates and performs complete physical examinations.
  • Analyzes and interprets patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, and/or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Diagnoses and treats acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, or injuries.
  • Orders, conducts, interprets, and/or evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s condition.
  • Orders, reviews and interprets laboratory tests to identify and assess patient’s condition.
  • Prescribes and administers medications based on patient characteristics, efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.
  • Makes medical diagnosis and prescribes treatment within scope of service.
  • Develops treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Makes appropriate follow ups and referrals.
  • Educates patients about self-management of acute and chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.
  • Responds to medical emergencies on school grounds. Communicates with school staff and emergency responders regarding patient needs and follow up.
  • Completes case management, including record review and lab review.
  • Communicates with outside providers and specialists regarding care of students.
  • Communicates patient needs with parents/guardians as appropriate while ensuring confidentiality according to Florida State Statute.
  • Provides consultation and technical assistance in evaluating the appropriateness of client care.
  • Documents all services in EHR timely and accurately.
  • Communicates with clinic team and other colleagues.
  • Complies with all selected HEDIS measure, standards and selected goals for quality of care.
  • Ensures that all requirements are met, including program objectives, productivity, service activities, and target population.
  • Provides excellent customer service.
  • Supports the growth of practitioner students by precepting.
  • Assists with training of new clinical staff members.
  • Learns and applies concepts of continuous quality improvement.
  • Participates in quality improvement projects and initiatives within the program and across the DOH organization.
  • Assists in the development of policy and protocols related to the management of nursing care problems and the delivery of client care.
  • Keeps supervisor informed.
  • Completes timesheet, EARS, and mandatory training in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Completes incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Completes training to promote professional growth.
  • Participates in peer review and provider, team, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Schedules time off in advance and collaborates with supervisor to ensure work responsibilities are covered when absent.
Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position
