Overview

This position operates a bus to provide transportation services to rural residents of the county. This position reports directly to Lead Driver II.

Responsibilities
  • Operates a bus along an assigned route.
  • Picks up and drops off patrons; collects fares; transports para-transit/demand response passengers.
  • Provides information to the general public regarding routes, established stops, schedules and services.
  • Conducts pre- and post-trip vehicle safety inspections; checks brakes, tires, lights, wipers, and wheelchair lift.
  • Conducts a walk-around vehicle inspection; reports equipment defects and problems to dispatch and Lead Drivers.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of vehicles.
  • Checks passenger  to assess and collect proper fares.
  • Maintains contact with dispatcher, Lead Drivers, and other drivers by way of two-way radio.
  • Completes required paperwork and reports.
  • Operates wheelchair lift and secures wheelchair passengers as trained by Lead Drivers.
  • Operates buses for special services as assigned.
  • Records time and mileage for each passenger trip.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

  • Skill in the safe operation of an assigned vehicle.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
Qualifications
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution and/or five years’ experience as a public transit bus driver.
  • Must have a CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement.
Complexity/Scope of Work
  • The work consists of related bus operation and customer service duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to drive a bus along an assigned route to provide transportation services to rural residents. Successful performance contributes to the safe and efficient provision of services.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
  • Occasionally
    • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
    • Medium work that includes carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
    • Heavy work that includes carrying objects up to 100 pounds or more.
  • Constantly
    • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and poles.
    • Moving oneself in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
    • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
    • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
    • Adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.
    • Communicating with others to exchange information.
    • Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
    • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
    • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
    • Driving a County vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.
    • Working in low temperatures.
    • Working in high temperatures.
    • Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
    • Working in noisy environments.
    • Working in hazardous conditions.
    • Working in adverse environmental conditions is expected.
    • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
    • Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds.
Other Requirements/Information
  • Texas DOT Physical exam is required.
  • Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license.
  • The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.
  • This position is covered by Civil Service; therefore, it is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies.

Valid Texas Driver’s License. If the applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver’s License must be obtained prior to employment.
