This position is responsible for operating a truck in the maintenance of county requirements.

  • Performs daily check of tires and fluid levels on vehicle and equipment; performs minor repairs and maintenance as needed.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of equipment.
  • Operates a dump truck and a belly dump truck to transport dirt and other materials to work sites.
  • Operates a water and vacuum truck to water roads.
  • Operates a patching truck in support of road maintenance and repair operations.
  • Operates a refuse truck along an assigned route.
  • Operates a grapple truck to pick up trash and tree branches.
  • Operates a winch truck to transport equipment to and from work sites.
  • Operates an emulsion distributor truck to seal asphalt roads.
  • Installs cones and traffic control devices; flags traffic as needed.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of county policies and procedures pertaining to road maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
  • Skill in operating assigned trucks and equipment.
  • Skill in establishing safe work zones.
  • Skill in the maintenance and repair of a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
  • A high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution; preferred.
  • Must have one (1) year of experience as a CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
Complexity/Scope of Work
  • The work consists of related truck driving duties. Inclement weather, dangerous field conditions, and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to operate trucks in support of the construction and maintenance of county roads and trash collection. Successful performance helps ensure safe and serviceable roads, bridges, and infrastructure.
Physical Demands/Work Environment Occasionally
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and poles.
  • Moving oneself in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
Constantly
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Driving a county vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.
  • Working in low temperatures.
  • Working in high temperatures.
  • Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
  • Working in noisy environments.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
Other Requirements/Information
  • Texas DOT Physical Exam is required.
  • Must possess a valid and current CDL Driver's License for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this job. Pre-employment drug/alcohol testing, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), and criminal background checks are required.
  • This position is covered by Civil Service; therefore, it is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies.
