General Summary
Performs routine maintenance on solid waste vehicles. Washes garbage trucks, changes cameras, monitors, and wiring, and changes greasing ports.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. - Greases, lubricates, and changes oil on light mechanical and non-mechanical equipment, service batteries, and other parts.
- Changes, repairs, and rotates tires; checks and adjusts brakes, wiper blades, light bulbs, emergency sirens and flashers, and other mechanical parts.
- Performs minor and less difficult repairs and installation work.
- Adheres to City's preventative maintenance schedule; performs routine mechanical checks to prevent minor break downs and catastrophic failures.
- Performs tire checks on all equipment; measures and installs various tires.
- Fills vehicles with gasoline and maintains log to track usage.
- Maintains stock of mounted tires for use on City vehicles; responds to calls to change flat tires in the field.
- Performs related work as required.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures and methods including computers and applicable software.
- Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Knowledge of service point locations for all light equipment for all City vehicles.
- Knowledge in specifications of all fluids used on automobiles, wheel, and tire applications for City units.
- Knowledge of battery specifications for City vehicles.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures.
- Skill in organization and time management.
- Skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to meet schedules and deadlines of the work.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries.
- Ability to read and follow manufactures guidelines and maintenance schedule.

Education and Experience
At least six (6) months of general experience. Experience in preventive service maintenance is preferred.
Required Licenses or Certifications- Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
