This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the supervision of residents of the juvenile detention center.

  • Supervises the work of Juvenile Supervision Officers; ensures compliance with policies and procedures; ensures the completion of all shift duties.
  • Inspects to ensure that resident chores are completed efficiently, effectively, and according to schedules.
  • Administers medication approved by the nurse or physician; maintains related documentation.
  • Reports problems to the Facility Administrator or Assistant Facility Administrator.
  • Reviews and responds to resident grievance complaints.
  • Processes new residents; prepares case and booking forms.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of referrals, daily intake log, and visitors' log.
  • Gathers necessary information and secures parental signatures for the completion of case files and releases.
  • Trains staff to conduct searches and pat-downs and to restrain detainees.
  • Conducts daily inspections of facility and staff; conducts visual inspections of facility equipment, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire exits, and HVAC systems; maintains related documentation.
  • Coordinates and conducts perimeter checks.
  • Supervises visits to detainees by family, law enforcement officers, and attorneys.
  • Escorts detainees to detention hearings, court, medical services, or other locations.
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Applies non-violent restraint techniques on violent, suicidal, and disruptive detainees.
  • Prepares and maintains necessary forms and documentation, including activity logs.
  • Assists in distributing meals to residents.
  • Assists in planning resident activities.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle.
  • Completes incident or accident reports.
  • Supervises drug testing.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Texas Juvenile Justice Department standards for juvenile detention center operations.
  • Knowledge of juvenile detention center security principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, county ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in management and supervision.
  • Skill in the management and supervision of juvenile detainees.
  • Skill in problem-solving.
  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
Qualifications
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Must have at least one ( 1 ) year of relevant experience.
Complexity/Scope of Work
  • The work consists of related duties in supervising and participating in the supervision of juvenile detainees. The unique needs of each resident contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the supervision of juvenile justice center residents. Successful performance contributes to the security and safety of residents.

Other Requirements/Information
  • Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license.
  • The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drugand alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.
  • This position is not covered under Civil Service; however, all other Webb County policies apply.
