Job Description
Conducts on-site inspections of residential and commercial buildings and other structures in the City to ensure that the electrical lay‑out and building/structures comply with minimum city ordinances and building codes. Reviews plans of construction, alteration, or repair to determine whether plans, workmanship, and related subsystems conform with existing electrical code requirements.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Conducts on-site inspections to ensure new and add‑on construction is in compliance with existing electrical codes.
- Assists the public by providing information and instruction regarding electrical wiring procedures.
- Checks and reviews plans, specifications, and materials for compliance with city ordinance and building codes.
- Computes fees for electrical permits and prepares application for permits; ensures that accuracy and completeness of the same.
- Advises property owners, contractors, and other interested parties on matters concerning codes and compliance.
- Prepares electrical permits.
- Assists other inspectors in code enforcement by calling their attention to possible or potential problems.
- Maintains a record of inspections and posts inspection and results on permit register.
- Investigates complaints concerning violations of the electrical code.
- Submits proposed changes in the code.
- Maintains detailed inspection records and reports.
- Documents violations, approvals, and corrective actions.
- Updates permit tracking system.
- Assists with issuance of electrical permits.
- Issues correction notices for violations.
- Investigates complaints regarding dangerous or illegal wiring.
- Enforces stop‑work orders when installations are unsafe.
- Coordinates with Code Enforcement on unpermitted work.
- Reviews permit applications for accuracy and completeness.
- Calculates electrical permit fees when required.
- May assist customers at the permit counter, by phone, and electronically.
- Provides technical assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and the public regarding code requirements and permitting procedures.
- May prepare and/or assist in the development of ordinance amendments/reports/PowerPoint presentations; conduct research and analysis of federal, state, and local codes and regulations; assist with coordination of departmental programs and initiatives; and/or prepare monthly, annual and special reports as required.
- May be required to work after hours or on the weekends.

- Knowledge of existing ordinances, laws, and regulations governing electrical installations and repairs in commercial and residential structures to make inspections and determine conformance.
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques of commercial and residential electrical installations to conduct inspections and determine conformity.
- Knowledge of arithmetic to compute permit fees and measurements or tolerances taken in the field.
- Knowledge of basic electrical and mechanical inspections.
- Ability to read plans and specifications to determine conformance to the latest adopted International Building Codes and National Electrical Code.
- Ability to make decisions to determine permit compliance with established standards.
- Ability to use computer and electronic devices necessary to complete reports and inspections.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, property owners, the public, and co‑workers.
- Ability to assist other employees in understanding the implications of codes and ordinances.
- Ability to orally communicate in the English and Spanish languages.
- Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
