Position: Building Inspection Superintendent, (A262120-4), 211, Building Inspections

Supervises building inspectors to ensure compliance with property codes. Oversees, assigns, and performs inspections, as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff. Supervisory functions include: makes hiring and termination decisions; prioritizes assignments and directs work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hire salaries and salary changes;

    and acts as liaison between employees and management.
  • Provides customer service, often to customers with questions and complaints related to denied inspections.
  • Reviews plans, conducts field verifications for permit process, and approves residential and commercial swimming pool plans for code and city ordinance compliance.
  • Conducts residential and commercial building inspections.
  • Interprets and enforces all applicable federal, state, and local code including but not limited to Code of Ordinances, Texas Local Government Code, Land Development Code, and Subdivision Ordinance; identifies and recommends modifications for code compliance and other laws pertaining to regulations of building construction.
  • Executes daily inspection audits.
  • Maintains detailed inspection records and reports.
  • Identifies deficiencies and prepares written correction notices.
  • Participates in project meetings, workshops, townhall, open houses or related type meetings with staff, the public, stakeholders, or elected officials etc., as needed.
  • Provides technical assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and the public regarding code requirements and permitting procedures.
  • May prepare and/or assist in the development of ordinance amendments/reports/PowerPoint presentations; conduct research and analysis of federal, state, and local codes and regulations; assist with coordination of departmental programs and initiatives; and/or prepare monthly, annual and special reports as required.
  • May prepare and give public presentations.
  • May require work after hours or on the weekends.
  • Will be required to drive a City vehicle for city business use.
  • Performs related work as required.
COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of existing ordinances, laws, and regulations governing building construction
  • Knowledge of basic building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing inspections
  • Knowledge of flood hazard areas
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures and methods including computers and applicable software
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee supervision

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
