This position is responsible for assisting the teacher in the planning and provision of a high-quality early childhood experience for preschool children that meets all Head Start Program Performance Standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have good computer skills (working knowledge of Microsoft programs).
  • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • Must have some classroom teaching experience, preferred.
  • Must have a current CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s license and be insurable; an MVR is required.
  • Must maintain all Local, State and Federal qualifications for the position on an annual basis.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At a minimum, have a CDA credential or a state‑awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential; are enrolled in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate degree in Child Development / Early Childhood, or are enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within two years of the time of hire.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and in the Spanish language.
  • Have some classroom teaching experience.
  • Have good computer skills (working knowledge of Microsoft programs).

  • Must maintain all Local, State, and Federal qualifications for the position annually.
Complexity/Scope of Work
  • Supervise children at all times.
  • Plan and implement children’s individual needs and strengths and utilize them for classroom instruction, based on the teacher’s input.
  • Working with the teacher, create and maintain a classroom environment that supports learning.
  • Maintain adequate teaching materials and facilitate children’s active exploration of material, activities, and environment, with the teacher’s guidance.
  • Model best practices. Teaching strategies must be based on children’s individual needs and the Head Start Program Performance Standards, HSPPS and Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework, HSELOF.
  • Use positive approaches to guide children’s behavior towards active involvement in learning and the development of self‑discipline.
  • ISD Teacher Assistants conduct 2 home visits and 2 parent conferences per family on an annual basis, in order to maintain open communication with the children’s parents and to report children’s progress, with the teacher’s input and guidance.

  • Moving oneself in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 30‑40 pounds in all directions.
  • Driving a county vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.
  • Working in low temperatures.
  • Working in high temperatures.
  • Working in noisy environments.
  • Working in small and/or enclosed spaces.
  • Working in adverse environmental conditions is expected.
  • Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Medium work that includes carrying objects up to 50 pounds
Constantly
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
Valid Texas Driver’s License*
