This position receives calls from customers and provides call routing and general information to customers regarding tax payments, and motor vehicle information.

  • Answers and routes incoming calls on a complex digital telephone system.
  • Provides information obtained from a variety of sources to field questions from the public regarding departments, phone numbers, operational hours, etc.
  • Assists callers in identifying needs and then routing calls appropriately.
  • Updates and maintains personal copies of the staff directory and other resources to ensure accurate dispensing of information.
  • Takes calls, messages, and documents incoming calls.
  • Supports customers by managing calls each day efficiently while maintaining professionalism and an upbeat tone.
  • Collects and verifies telephone numbers, addresses, and proper spelling of names.
  • Operates the switchboard and routes incoming calls to appropriate departments.
  • Responds to customer inquiries with patience and positivity and to establish excellent first impressions.
  • Maintains accurate records of calls placed and received.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of information management skills and practices.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of computer operations, including the use of email, web browsers, and customer service techniques.
  • Ability to think quickly and communicate orally with a variety of callers; handle a high volume of calls (e.g., 100 calls per hour).
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Must be able to type at least 30 wpm.
Complexity/Scope of Work
  • The work consists of related technical duties. The need for accuracy contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide clerical support for department operations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.
Physical Demands/Work Environment

Occasionally

  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.
  • Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds.

Constantly

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Working in noisy environments.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
Other Requirements/Information
  • Must possess a valid and current driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.
  • This position is covered by Civil Service; therefore, it is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies.

Valid Texas Driver’s License*

* If the applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver’s License must be obtained prior to employment.
