DEFINITION

Supervise and work with the lifeguards on duty for general operating hours or pool parties as first responder in the case of an emergency for any swimming activity and/or event at municipal pools; including but not limited to: making appropriate rescues for any victim, performing CPR for any breathing or cardiac emergency as well as providing minor first aid. Head Lifeguards will also be responsible for maintaining the appearance of the facility, resolving customer complaints and acting as a deck supervisor.

Receives direct supervision from the Pool Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • Prevent accidents and eliminate or minimize hazardous situations.
  • Respond quickly to all emergencies.
  • Administer any emergency first aid needed by the victim of an accident.
  • Resolve customer complaints in a professional manner.
  • Educate the patrons and inform them of the purpose and need for rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary facility.
  • Observe and enforce rules and regulations of the facility and verify the lifeguard staff is doing the same.
  • Responsible for the lifeguard shifts and their attendance; reporting any “no-shows” or “call-in” on the appropriate documentation and turning in with shift report.
  • Responsible for attempting to find coverage when short staffed.
  • Complete records and reports such as shift reports and time sheets during or at the end of each shift and also verify all lifeguards have completed their paperwork and job duties.
  • Establish the lifeguard rotation schedule at the beginning of each shift.
  • Monitor lifeguard scans and surveillance techniques and correct if not to standard.
  • Check pool chemistry and ensure chemical levels are normal for swimming activities
  • Attend all in-service training sessions as scheduled
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

For indefinite periods of time - exposure to the outdoors and extreme heat; exposure to fumes, odors, mechanical, electrical, explosive, radiation, and chemical hazards; walking; twisting body; standing; squatting; sitting; seeing; running; kneeling; grasping; climbing; cleaning; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 200 pounds; carrying up to 50 pounds; using both hands for simple and firm grasping;

clarity of hearing; fine finger manipulation; operation of calculator, pool vacuums, pool mechanical equipment, and a variety of hand tools.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be 16 years or older.
  • An understanding of facility rules, policies and procedures regarding American Red Cross Lifeguarding.
  • Demonstrate supervisory, decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, accountable and dependable for the job task as well as hold the lifeguards accountable for their tasks.
  • Must be safety conscious and should have a conviction for any safety concerns.
Ability to:
  • Be available to work 5-6 days per week including Saturday and Sunday.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke.
  • Tread water 2 minutes using legs only. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Retrieve a 10lb brick from a depth of at least 7 ft and swim 20 yards back to wall and exit pool within a time limit of 1 minute and 40 seconds.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid Certification and AED certifications.
