Title:
Laboratory Scientist – Clinical Organic Unit
Location:100% In-Office – State Lab in Lansing, Michigan
Purpose:The Laboratory Scientist provides laboratory analytical support for the Clinical Chemistry Section. The section analyzes human specimens, biological samples, and other epidemiologically important samples for drugs and adulterants in drug products, organic pollutants, heavy metals, other environmental contaminants, and metabolites of chemical warfare agents. The Богincije carry out a full range of professional laboratory scientist assignments using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, and other laboratory methodologies.
Duties include reviewing data, reporting results, helping develop and validate new methods, and following validation plans, summary reports, and written laboratory procedures, practices, and policies.
Duty 1 – 60%
Perform analysis of human specimens and various other matrices for trace quantities of controlled substances, PCBs, pesticides, PFAS, and other organic chemicals and environmental contaminants to support drug‑checking for harm‑reduction services, biomonitoring, surveillance projects, and public‑health emergency preparedness. Tasks include sample preparation, qualitative and quantitative instrumental analysis, ensuring accurate data, and reporting results in a timely manner. All work follows established procedures, practices, and policies.
- Sample preparation for GC or LC systems including extraction, cleanup, and column chromatography.
- Preparation and aliquoting of analytical standards from stock solutions, reagents, and QC samples.
- Use of instrument data‑analysis software for acquisition, processing, and report generation.
- Monitoring and replacement of condenser and instrument gases.
- Preparation of detailed written reports of laboratory data and archiving of results.
- Maintenance of accurate, detailed records of all work performed.
- Review specimen results for accuracy and QC compliance before submission.
- Proper disposal of biological and chemical waste.
- Adherence to universal precautions, laboratory safety, infection control, chemical hygiene, and hazardous‑material handling.
Support development of new laboratory procedures, maintain and update existing methods, review and update procedures annually, work with other scientists on method evaluation and modification.
- Review scientific literature, bulletins, and government documents related to analytical procedures.
- Assist in planning and performing laboratory studies for method development, evaluation, and validation.
- Prepare reports documenting methods activities.
- Participate in review of methods development and validation studies.
- Maintain detailed records of method activities.
- Prepare written laboratory procedures per guidelines.
- Dispose of biological and chemical waste appropriately.
- Adhere to safety, infection control, and chemical hygiene protocols.
Troubleshoot analytical instrument performance issues, maintain instrument performance through preventive maintenance, monitor equipment function, and keep accurate maintenance records.
- Troubleshoot instrument performance issues and assist colleagues.
- Perform preventive maintenance on instrumentation (source/detector, column/inlet, vacuum systems, lab cleanliness).
- Maintain detailed, up‑to‑date records of all work performed.
- Monitor instrument performance following QC requirements.
- Ensure adequate inventory of consumables, reagents, and gases.
- Follow safety and chemical‑hygiene procedures.
Perform special projects within the section and division as required.
- Review scientific literature for technical information.
- Conduct laboratory studies directed by supervisor or project leads.
- Prepare reports documenting laboratory findings.
- Review and critiqueâmica scientific documents (poster presentations, publications, grants).
- Maintain detailed records of all work performed.
- Follow standard safety and hygiene procedures.
Function as a member of the Michigan Bioterrorism and Chemical Terrorism Public‑Health response teams as needed.
