ResponsibilitiesThe Mental Health Counselor provides emotional support to students experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, alcohol/drug abuse, and other emotional situations that interfere with academic success. The role assists individual students and groups with personal, social, and academic concerns in a manner that adheres to licensing requirements in Michigan for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC), Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSW-Clinical), and Licensed Psychologists, as well as their respective professional associations’ codes of ethics.
This position works closely with other Mental Health Counselors, administrators, and staff in the Center for Student Support, including the Center for Student Access, Student Life, Fostering Stars, Adult Resource Center, and Perkins Special Populations. It also collaborates with Academic Success Coaches, Academic Advisors, Career and Employment Services, Tutoring, and Public Safety. The Mental Health Counselor will consult regularly with instructional faculty to address student concerns.
The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the diversity of a multi-cultural population and work effectively in a team-based environment, seeking continuous improvement and adherence to the community college philosophy.
This position requires a regular on-campus presence and is a provisional position based on provisional fund availability.
Regular on-campus presence is expected for all LCC employment. Any flexible work schedules and/or hybrid schedules approved by the College are subject to change based on the needs of the LCC community.
Final candidates will be subject to a criminal background check as part of the employment process.
Required Qualifications- Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology from an accredited institution.
- Significant demonstrated related work experience in mental health counseling.
- Must possess one of the following licenses:
Michigan Professional Counseling License (LPC), Michigan Professional Limited Counseling License (LLPC), Michigan Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW-Clinical), Michigan Limited Licensed Master Social Worker (LLMSW-Clinical), Licensed Psychologist (LP), or Limited Licensed Psychologist (LLP). - Experience working with diverse populations.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Higher education experience providing culturally competent treatment to a diverse population
- Member in good standing in relevant professional association.
