Unit Assistant Casual - Same Day Surgery

Position Summary

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, responsible for providing support to nursing staff and assisting in the delivery of patient/resident care following patient care plan and hospital policies and procedures.

• Provides routine patient/resident care services such as call light response; ambulating, transferring, and positioning; personal hygiene assistance, prescribed bowel and bladder program assistance, etc.
• Collects, records, and reports various patient/resident data. Reports changes in patient/resident condition.
• Provides general clerical support to unit such as answering the phone, data entry, and assembling, maintaining, and distributing various information.
• Transcribes physician orders and notifies appropriate parties of orders and consultations.
• Schedules procedures with other departments.
• Performs surgical skin preps, basic skin care procedures, bedside finger stick blood sugars, and quality control checks of blood glucose instruments.
• Performs general unit support activities such as postmortem care, cleaning of rooms and areas, running errands, making deliveries, responding to Code Blue pages, Code Red, etc.
• Ambulates, transfers, and positions patients/residents safely and effectively.
• Responds to patient/resident call lights quickly and efficiently.
• Performs assigned aspects of the patient/resident care plan in an efficient and effective manner.
• Maintains medical record in an orderly fashion with documents placed under appropriate chart dividers.
• If employee is a Nurse Assistant II, will continue within the scope of practice as a NA II and such duties.
• Performs other related responsibilities as necessary.

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Successful completion of a health unit coordinator course or, high school or college coursework in medical terminology and computer/data entry.
• Specialized education requirements, for those not meeting minimum six-month nursing assistance experience requirement, include:
• Acute care nursing assistant course preferred for acute care positions or
• Long term care nursing assistant course or
• Completion of an emergency medical technician program or
• Completion of medical assistant program or
• Completion of a clinical rotation while participating in an accredited nursing program.
• Prior nursing assistant experience of at least six months is required when the specialized education requirements identified above has not been met.
• BLS certification as Healthcare Provider or equivalent through the Military Training Network (MTN).

• Six months of clerical experience in healthcare setting. Direct patient care experience.
